If any of you have visited Kenya within the last couple of weeks, or are going to Kenya and returning before mid-September please try to find out for me what the honest safetly level is in Mombasa. I have never had a problem there.

However, last week an AlQuaida member blew himself and a policeman up in front of the police station with a hand grenage, and today in the Daily Nation they are talking of a terrorist's arsenal being found including anti-tank missiles, hand grenade, 6 AK-47's, assault rifles and ammo. Last week in the East African Standard they stated that police will now be meeting tourists at the airport and escorting them to their hotels (to me that sounds like putting a bulls eye on my back and telling everyone where I am staying).

I am trying not to get panicky about this, but if you have been there recently please let me know what the feeling is. I hate to change my trip around, and yet I don't want to ignore the uncomfortable feeling I am getting.

I believe that this is why tourism is way down in Kenya. I don't think we hear all of what goes on. I agree it is very scary when you are the one going into such an area. I won't make light of it by saying you could get hit by a car at home.
Hope you hear direct from someone who has been there. What about Nairobi? Usually the threat is more widespread than just Mombasa. Liz

Thanks for the reply. I haven't read of any problems in Nairobi at all. Things seem quiet there (except everyone is complaining of it being cold). Just use your usual precautions.

I will be flying from Nairobi to Mombasa and staying there for one night before going to Tsavo. I really don't want to cancel that part of the trip because I truly love Tsavo East. Perhaps I should start looking into what a small plane charter would be from Wilson. I'll wait a few more days and then contact my travel agent in Mombasa (who has been extremely honest with me all these years) before making any changes. Keep your fingers crossed for me please.

However, would appreciate news of anyone who has been there recently.
