Milky Eye of the Selinda Pride - Updates

http://www.wilderness.co.za/news/cam...?newsItem=5615

Hi! Check out the updates for Savuti camp on the above link. It appears like Milky Eye and buddy may have taken over the Savuti pride. Hmmmm interesting pride dynamics in the works? They are champions i guess ..... and looks like the 3 Selinda females and the 7 remaining cubs are in good hands!

Hi Hari,

I read it too yesterday.

Given the fact that they had a bit of a fight with the four males at old hippo pools (Lebala) in September 2007, it would be interesting to see what's going to happen within a timespan of two years.

Greetz,

Johan

Hi Johan,

Yes, interesting pride dynamics in the works .... i don't know if the four have technically split up yet (3 and one). But, sure will be interesting times ahead. Also, as those male lions get older and more aggressive - if they are going to takeover the Lebala area in addition to their current territory of Lagoon.

During the recent visit - only saw the one male lion around John's Pan - the other three were with the buffalo herds inside the mopane that particular week.

Rgds

These Lions must have something it certainly is not good looks. They have probably left the remnants of the "Selinda" pride as they are spending the vast majority of their time in Lebala, where there is a 3 male coalition. 4 weeks ago one of the original 4 was still spendinfg his time with the lone female.

Ken,

They certainly haven't left the Selinda pride. I have seen them without the pride and then all of a sudden a few days later they keep re-uniting. I think the pride has been feasting on the warthog piglets at Letchwe island. That was what i observed a couple months back .....

It's back and forth, i guess ...... just saw a nice picture of one of the cubs on the LE website. They grow up quickly, eh?

Hari,

I hope you also saw some nice pictures on my website and/or Pbase.

They do grow up quickly and 7 out of 8 is not bad after at least a year.

Is the Savute pride the same as the Bridge Pride?

Yes, Ken - lovely pictures. But my favourite will remain your version of the blood brothers video. Much better footage than the Nat Geo folks .......

Yes, 7 of the 8 is excellent. I hope none of the three female cubs were lost, though. 5 of them are males and will probably form another powerful co-altion for the area.

Not sure about the Savuti pride/Bridge pride reference .... i am not familiar with that pride, sorry.

Just to update all of you. It seems like they Milky eye and his buddy have indeed moved on to greener pastures. I saw the females about a month ago on a young giraffe neer hippo pools. That night 2 males came from up north and the females cleared out of the area very quickly. I have a bad feeling in my stomach everytime I think what may happen to the remaining cubs.

I'm pretty upset - Milky Eye is an idiot, besides being UGLY!!!

Now, it's Savuti's turn to keep him. Maybe they'll send the dogs and cheetah to Selinda and Kwando.

Hari,

Don't be too hard on him.

Milky Eye and his buddy are most likely being forced south-east by the co-alition of 4 from the Kwando.

But if they are still in command of the Selinda they will not tolerate an intrusion of 2 new males for long.

I also think that the youngsters are at an age where the females will come back into season without the need for new pride males to kill them.

Geoff.

Hi Geoff,

Yes, apologies to Milky Eye - afterall, he has provided some good safari moments!

I hope so! The cubs would be close to one year old now. One thing in their favour is, those male lions from Lagoon are still a bit young.

Cheers

I agree with Hari, the male coalition in Kwando consists of 3 youngish males between 3 and 4 years, I think they are still a little young to try a pride takeover.
The remaining Selinda Ladies are very strong, the youngest cubs must now be around 12 moths and the eldest around 15 months so they still have a long way to go.
The fourth and eldest male of the coalition was last seen by me in the company of the lone female, perhaps there might be a little surprise later in the year?

The four males from Lagoon is still to scared to challenge the 2 boys. Besides, they are more often 3 together and one on his own. The 2 males wandering through the territory were complete strangers to us. I have to say that, I have heard that, Milky Eye got his other eye injured too, and he was having trouble finding his way around. I think they were kicked out. They have spent an aweful amount of time defending the territory to the south for the last year. Would be nice to go back after 3 weeks of leave to find out whats been happening around there.

Hmmmm...... They have updated the WS game reports on the site for Selinda. Apparently the two new males are from Savuti. Don't know who kicked whom out of their territory, but, sure looks like rough times down the road! Milky Eye and freind better get their act, together!!!

Yup we saw the silver eyed lion at Savuti a couple of weeks ago. He and his brother were roaring it up at night. I have a photo of him lazing around after a meal.

Well ...... Finally!!!! The whole pride is still intact (except for the loss of one cub and that was quite a while ago).

They are calling the 5 male cubs, juveniles ....... SO, I suppose they have grown up quite a bit in the one year!

Anyways, this is great news and good to note that Milky Eye has got his act together and is back to defend his territory i.e., Selinda and Southern Kwando.

Cheers
Hari
