Migration: Where are the wildebeests now?

Will be in the Masai Mara Aug. 15. Does anyone know if the migration has made it to Kenya yet? Thanks

DH and I are going back for to Tanzania in January - YEAH! Our November Journey to Africa has left Africa in our souls. We need to go back. I hope the willys are back in southern Serengeti by January.

I hope this is not a dumb question - I know they follow the rain but by chance, do you think they will delay their arrival into southern Serengeti because they got to Mara late?

I am no expert on the migration, but my understanding is that the big herds will stay in one spot as long as there is food and water for them there. When it runs out, they move. So how long they stay in the Mara is likely dependent on current rainfall there, not the timing of rainfall in the Serengeti earlier in the year. That is just my guess.

Mary, I'm no biologist but I've read several books on the Serengeti (and I stayed at a Holiday Inn Express) ... they go to the south Serengeti plains for two reasons ... first the short-grass forage is better there (more nutritious) than on the more coarse grasses further north and second because they drop the calves here, typically all within a couple of weeks period to flood the predators.

So as long as there is some rain to green up the short-grass plains the wildies and zebras will be drawn here. They can't wait to get out of the Mara :)

Bill -

a good one :)
... for me the Holiday Inn Express didn't leave a lasting impression!

I hope to avoid the Holiday Inn Express :)

Thanks Bill. We can't wait to be back in Tanzania. At first DH and I were talking about August or September next year but I don't think we can wait. Tanzania calls.
