Migration Questions

I am blaming Hari for this... I was happy to go on one safari this year, and hopefully back next year. With his talk, and all the posts on the board, I am strongly thinking of going back this year.. lol.

I want to spend a week with Kwando (had such a great time in Feb) and a couple of days hopefully in Cape Town. As timing goes, I would love to spend 4-5 days to see the migration (pending availability). I understand how hard it is to guess, and I have read a lot of the previous posts. Has anyone gone around the end of Oct, early Nov? Where do you think the migration will be? With 4-5 days would this be a good time of the year to with high probability find it, or am I better off to stay in SA at Mala Mala or something similiar?

Thanks for the help.

The time frame you suggest is probably one of the toughest to time correctly to be in the right place. Not only do you have the weather and the wildebeest variables, but also an international border to contend with.

The herds are leaving the Mara and entering the Serengeti and it's not like you can just follow them across that border. With 4-5 days, I think you have to make your decision on place or the other. If you had more time, then you could hit both spots and hopefully be lucky in at least one.

If you will be returning to Africa and you have the luxury of picking your time to travel, then I personally would shoot for the migration on another trip.

These sites have more info, maps, little animated wildebeests, etc.

Good luck whatever you decide.

Hi Richard,

As Lynn says, the migration in October is going to be really tough to predict. However, if you can swing say end August or early Sept you have a great chance to see the action in the Masai Mara.

I know you are a huge fan of Kwando like me, so if October is the only time you can travel.......i would advice you to stick to just Kwando(longer trip to their camps)as the game viewing would be outstanding then and add-on Cape Town.

I think Tanzania warrants a longer trip than just 4 or 5 days, i would suggest you go there on another trip with prior planning......

Hi guys

This is an interesting post. I was wondering if this is an Elninyo year (I believe it is) and what sort of impact it will have on the weather in Africa. Perhaps a lot more rain in the next few weeks and then perhaps an extended dry period?

El Nino, yet another variable.

At least El Nino cannot be blamed on Hari.

I wouldn't let El Nino alter my travel plans.
