migration

When is the best month to see the migration in Masai Mara? When is the best month to see the migration in Serengeti?
Thanks.

Migration time varies depending on the rains and when the wildebeest and zebra decide to move. Remember, they are animals and are on their schedule, not ours.

Generally, Migration is the Masai Mara can be anytime between July to October, with best month usually late August into September. However, this year, the herds were still in the Mara as late as November.

In the Serengeti, Migration can be anytime between November to June, in various different sections of the Serengeti. Also note that there are some herds, especially in the Western Serengeti that never migrate as there is constant water available here.

There is also a Migration period at the Tarangire National Park between June to October.

But there are no guarantees that when you are visiting you will see large herds and/or see a "crossing" at the Mara or Talek Rivers in the Mara.

Nick: Sandi is right on in her comments about the Migration, I would just point out that part of the migration includes the calving season Jan-Feb in the southern Serengeti, Ndutu area. As many as 8,000 wildebeests are born each day, yes, day, and it truly is a battle between the predators and the newborns. So you may want to consider that time of year as well. Just so you know, when we were in the Mara in September 2002, we were lucky to witness a crossing of the Talek River. Hundreds of wildebeests made their way across the river. It was dusty, loud and seemingly chaotic, but it was absolutely magical! We waited by the river for three hours - three very long hours, did I mention three looong hours? There is never any guarantee of seeing a crossing. We saw it on our third day in the Mara, while people staying in the same camp for upwards of two weeks never saw one. But, how exciting to think that you are planning a trip! Yahoo! Yippee!
