Meno a Kwena, deleted thread, again...

Amol had re-posted his concerns regarding Meno but the thread has disappeared again?

Amol has also advised that he can't actually access the Africa forum any longer. He is going to contact Fodors as this may be an oversight.

Anyone any idea what's happened here?

Is this normal if someone tries to complain about a supplier?

the_smelly_polecat Apr 17th, 2008 06:42 AM

I am the one called a 'smelly polecat' by a certain someone recently.

Following that, 2 successive postings where deleted by Fodors moderators without explanation. I will be the first to accept fault if its pointed out to me in a proper manner. However, this inexplicable deletion of posts by Fodors moderators looks bad on them and plays into the hand of operators who not only deliver a poor level of service, but then follow it up with an arrogant attitude.

Please could the moderators be kind enough to highlight why these posts were deleted?

As for me - I am outta here. I thought this forum was about sharing thoughts and opinions with like minded people with a passion for Africa. I thought this forum was about posting honest travel reviews and experiences. Clearly not. Heavy handed censorship isnt acceptable.

Before I leave though, I will be hosting that correspondance on my own website and will place a link here for those who care to visit it.

Goodbye.

I am checking on this and will get back to you.

In the future, inquiries can quickly be made by emailing us at [email protected].

Thanks!

Anyone any idea what's happened here?

Editors deleted the threads after Amol posted emails from the camp manager. I guess they felt it was getting too personal.

Is this normal if someone tries to complain about a supplier?

Seems like complaints are OK, but the editors step in if personal info is posted (like full names or email addresses) or if it gets too bitter. It's a judgement call on the editor's part.

Perhaps we should just leave this forum to people who need advice on what to wear and the dyslexic.

PredatorBiologist Apr 17th, 2008 07:27 AM

This does not reflect well on Fodors and I hope Katie can shed some light and quickly get Amol restored.

I think Bill_H is right about the first thread where entire emails were posted but the second thread did not include names, contact info, or any other information that should remain private. What it did include was a detailed account of a poor safari experience and a camp owners poor response toward a customer -- the kind of thing that brings value to this board. Especially since the owner said no one should take this board seriously and that anyone who does should not visit Meno. Sounds like a message we should all hear since it was about us that participate here. Of course perhaps he was correct because if valid complaints are going to be censored we should not take this board seriously.

Amol, see you outside of Stalingrad! Signed the Malodorous Zorilla

I did post a quote from Wikipedia that was a quote, identified and with quotation marks - I hope that that did not run afoul of the guidelines :(

Lynneb Apr 17th, 2008 08:50 AM

As Predator Bill says, the post yesterday shouldn't have caused anyone a problem and Amol had already asked Fodors what was the problem with his initial posting but had not received an answer so he had to guess the best way forward.

I was with the party travelling with Amol and can second his points regarding Meno. The Meno camp itself is fine, the tents are great and the setting is beautiful. One of the guides assigned to us (Geoff) was also very good.

What we had problems with was their approach to safety and their lack of organisation. Now we have an issue with their response to complaints...

Katie_H Apr 17th, 2008 09:12 AM

I do apologize in our delay in response to those emails Lynne. We are making an effort today to work this out. Thanks to everyone for voicing your opinion.

amolkarnik Apr 17th, 2008 12:42 PM

I have been in touch with the moderators at Fodors and they have satisfactorily resolved this issue. Thanks Katie_H.

Unfortunately there is no way for them to recover the deleted thread and I am not taking any further chances. The correspondance is now available for those interested to view on my own website at http://www.karnik.plus.com/meno-mails.htm

I believe this does not contravene any T&C's.

Unfortunately, this means you guys will have to suffer me a bit longer.

I do wish that moderators would COMMUNICATE with long-standing members to explain thread deletions and most especially, if considering banning them! Common courtesy!

matnikstym Apr 17th, 2008 03:54 PM

Kavey, when the original Meno thread was deleted I wrote Katie and she did respond to my email, so there is communication...after the fact yes and I agree that if someone with a track record here is going to get banned, they should let them know why before the ban and try to correct the problem.

Thanks Katie for correcting this particular episode!

sniktawk Apr 17th, 2008 10:39 PM

Amol,

Can we have the rest of your trip report now, PLEASE?

matnikstym Apr 17th, 2008 11:06 PM

agree with sniktawk...please!!!

amolkarnik Apr 17th, 2008 11:48 PM

Fully intend to post a trip report. Unfortunately, havent had time to write it up. In fact, I havent even seen my pictures yet!! They;re still on the memory cards..

Kavey Apr 18th, 2008 02:23 AM

Katie, I agree is brilliant but sadly, she doesn't do the day-to-day moderation, if I understand things correctly.

It's good she responded to your email but am I right in thinking you had not been contacted until you took the initiative to email yourself?

What I would like to see is a bit more communication and courtesy from those who perform the daily moderation and who deleted the thread and banned your ID in the first place, both without emailing you about it.

amolkarnik Apr 18th, 2008 03:13 AM

Kavey - No communication from the moderators after the first deletion. No communication after the second deletion + suspension of my account either.

Bit dissapointing but effectively resolved by Katie.

atravelynn Apr 20th, 2008 06:15 AM

I am going to remember that Meno- means Me No.

I want places like this to do well so it is disappointing when something like this happens.

Now on to that sneaky polecat. Will you reveal yourself? How about a Guess the Polecat contest?

I'm going to say Lifelist! That's not because I think you would be smelly or that any of those derogatory definitions of polecat that were listed earlier fit you. It's based only on the cleverness of the post.

If I win do I get a prize?
