Masai Mara migration
 

Can anyone tell us where is the best part of the Masai mara to view the Wildebeste migration at the moment. Or better still, where might it be in mid September if it is possible to predict. We are having a debate with our Safari organiser about this and it will help us finalize our plans

Why not tell us what the debate is about. Which camp is being offered by the safari operator versus what you might prefer. With this information and the link that Mitch provided, we might be able to come up with a solution for you.

I can not offer any answers to your question but am also interested in learning the best location in the Masai Mara area to see any migration in first week of November or is this too late to see any.I am having difficulty in understanding the time spans of this migration.

When is comes to animals there are no guarantees. Generally, the migrating herds remain in the Mara thru September and into October. Most often they start moving south to the Serengeti mid-October, but have been known to move out at the beginning of October and a few years back were still in the Mara the first few weeks of November. Much depends on when the rains arrive.

But there are resident herds, and it's not like all animals are gone. Maybe not in the numbers when the Migration is in full - but one never does know.

The debate is between Leleshwa, Little governors, Sekenani, and Il Moran. We will stay at two of these camps and wonder which will be the best combination.

The migration mainly takes place in the Mara Triangle (left) and some areas east of the Mara River (up to Talek Gate near 8+11).

Sekenani (13) and Leleshwa (same area) are located on the far right.

Decide yourself what will be best for you.

Thanks for the link Mitch -- I've been looking for a map like this!

Out of curiosity, do you think Kichwa Tembo is too far from the crossing? Some people who have stayed at Governors' seem to think it was too far.

There are several crossing points, all along the Mara and Talek Rivers, and one is located near Kichwa Tembo. As far as I remember Kichwa Tembo is a good location in September or early October, but IMO it's too far away from other crossing points. It all depends on luck - to be at the right place at the right time.

If you're looking for upmarket accommodation to see the migration I would recommend Rekero (www.rekero.com) at Talek River.
