Mara to Ngorongoro

Do you have to fly between Wilson and Kia? What's the easiest way to go? I don'te believe that you are allowed to do a border crossing from the Mara into the Serengeti -Is this corect?

Thanks!

I can't answer your question about the flights, but I am able to confirm that the border between the Mara and Serengeti is closed. Robin

Yup, Wilson/JRO or JKIA/JRO. Once in Kili, know that there is no airstrip at Ngorongoro, closest is at Lk. Manyara, then a 2.5/hr road transfer. You can make a fllight connection at JRO to Manyara and drive, or from JRO transfer to Arusha for overnight and drive next morning (4.5/hrs) to Ngorongoro. You can also fly to Manyara, but again... have that 2.5/hr drive to Crater.

Having been in Kenya you will require a Yellow Fever inoc and proof of same for entry to Tanzania.

There is a way to get from Masai Mara to Serengeti. From the Mara (from Little Governor's Camp), the drive takes you west acrosss the Mara plains to the Sirare Tarime border. The entrance to the Serengeti is at Ndabaka Gate. It is a very long drive on not very good roads. I know someone who just did this trip at the beginning of July 2010. You would have to travel further south to reach Ngorongoro, so unless you stop in Serengeti for one night, I would not recommend it.

Regardless how you go by road from the Mara to Serengeti it's long, long and still long. There is a new Safari Link flight from the Mara to Migori airstrip to the southwest of the Mara, about 15/miles north of the Isebania border, but you then have to have a guide/vehicle meet you to cross into Tanzania and the same long drive thru the Serengeti to Ngorongoro.

Hi, folks,

I am going on a quick trip to the mara sept2010.

Questions:

If I am entering Kenya (JKIA) directly via AMS, I am not expected to have the YF cert, correct?
And, I suppose I can get the visa on arrival... (US citizen)

Thx !

Tiger -

If ONLY visiting Kenya, rriving from the US, via AMS to NBO/JKIA, then NO YF inoc is required. Just don't place a toe over the border into Tanzania :)

Sandi, I can always count on you for help.

Nope, won't place my toe over the border :-).

Thanks, as always !!!

I am in Kenya and i have friends who have done this via road and it is possible if only you have legal traveling documents. No cause to worry you need to plan for your tour early enough then the rest will flow smoothly.

I just completed the overland drive from the Crater to the Serengeti to the Mara with an overnight in the Serengeti and border crossing at Isebania. It was a long day made longer by very muddy roads from Isebani to the Mara. However it was all part of the adventure! We left the Serena Serengeti at 7:30 am and arrived at Isebania at about 1:30 pm (with a quick look see at Lake Victoria and eating lunch as we drove). It then took us from about 2 pm (after clearing immigration for both TZ and Kenya) to about 6pm from Isebania to Serena Mara.

Having just crossed from serengeti to the Mara I can tell you it's a long hard road. Approx. 10 hours which included a stop for lunch and a couple of restroom stops. Really bad road but interesting trip.

Also although yellow fever recommended it is not required.
