Here's the update. 13 puppies emerged from the den around the start of August and they are doing great thus far.

Thanks for the update Bill! That is terrific news. I was watching the wild dogs at another camp in Botswana the day of your original post otherwise I would have seen this the first time and made a comment. Mapula definitely has my interest. Go little doggies! ((&))

We've just returned from our Botswana trip (report coming up soon...), stayed at Mapula 2 nights and spent plenty of time watching the dogs, it was great.

The pack was 7 adults (2 of them 1-yr olds from last year's litters) and 13 puppies, we saw them all out of the den.

Our guide (Josiah) explained that this year they also have two litters, but they didn't know yet how many were from the alpha and how many from the beta female since they were born shortly apart. You could tell some puppies were slightly bigger than others, though.

we were hoping to see them hunt, but when we were there there was a full moon and they hunted during the night, so we had to settle for watching the adults regurgitating food for the pups.

Torrem: I will be anxious to see your Mapula report but I'm very glad that you were able to see the wonderful puppies. I did not know they were from two mothers, that is unusual but not too rare to have them within about 4 weeks of one another and the alpha female will creche them all into her litter. Last year was so odd because of the spacing of 4 months between litters. You must have been there at a perfect time! Hope you took some great photos of the pups.

Josiah has such a wonderful manner about him that I imagine you enjoyed your time in his company. Look foward to reading more.

Bill, I'll describe Mapula in more detail in my trip report but let me tell you that I loved the place: very laid-back relaxed atmosphere (Doctor is such a character!), total focus on game viewing, beautiful setting, extremely friendly staff. My wife also liked it although she preferred other more luxurious camps, said the room was not as tidy as in other places...

Josiah is a great guide and has a very good attitude, we definitely enjoyed having him. He was surprised when I told him I knew about the den, I mentioned that you had posted its discovery here, he remembered your stay with them last year

Torrem: sorry for the delay getting back on here, I'm on family vacation but still checking by when I have the chance.

Glad you felt similar about the Mapula experience as I did. Also, happy to hear that Josiah remembered me. We always talked after our game drives to compare sightings but I was guided by Dicks. The two of them along with Doctor is a phenomenal guiding staff, I'd be excited to go out with any of them.

I'll be watching for the full details on your trip report.

Boring perhaps but has a point - your previous post seems to be quite hypocritical. Touché, I'd say!

Another extremely sad waste of time!

Have you nothing better to do. Why not get concerned about the US takever of Etosha.

Oh sniktawk, you are a hypocrite.
You have no idea what anyone here is or isn't concerned about, unless you're naive enough to make sweeping assumptions based on their posting history in this forum!
One could argue that your posts under a second ID are just as much a waste of time as anything else!
