Mali/West African Travel

I was wondering if anyone, who is well-travelled, could tell me their experience with West Africa. I realize that it's not the game preserves, etc., but how does the experience of a west African trip compare with other trips you've taken. Is it well-worth doing?
Thanks for any input!

I haven't been, but look up the Dogon Escarpment. Supposed to be a great trek to do.

We did a trip to Mali 2 years ago. Unfortunately, so far, it is our only trip to Africa so I cannot compare it to the game preserves. All I can say is that to this day I think about that trip often. Timbucktu was very interesting, the crowds and niger river docks of Mopti, the villagers we met along the way, the escarpment of the Dogon--it is not for the traveler who needs spas and gourmet meals--but the sights and memories will stay with us forever.

I lived and have traveled in West Africa. I have found Nigeria to be a very interesting place. Liberia has nice beaches. Ghana; a very lively cultural scene. I concur with cece--Mali is not for those who need too many creature comforts. What I like most about Africa is that it makes us in the West realize how fortunate we are. And of course the memories will stay with me forever--especially the beaches of Liberia before the war. No I am not that old, I was a diplomatic brat. Enjoy though.

Hi Pewang!
My husband and I were in West Africa (Senegal and Mali) about nine months ago. We really loved Mali! The experience was more about the the people than the wildlife (like it is in East Africa). The people were friendly and we had a wonderful cultural experience. Trekking in Dogon is an incredible experience and you really shouldn't mess it if you have the opportunity. Visiting the markets is unique also.

Senegal was a lot more challenging. We found the transportation to be difficult and the people that we met were not as welcoming as in Mali. But every person's experience is different.

West Africa can be more expensive than you'd think. You can see our budget and itinerary here (for two people on a budget)- http://www.budgetyourtrip.com/mytrip....php?trip_id=1

Hope that helps!

Keep an eye on the situation as may have an effect on travel in Mali.
Best of luck. Were planning this ourselves but switched to Ethiopia.
