Malarone side effects

I wondered if anyone has experienced side effects from malarone, and how fast they showed up. Since you only start them a couple days before your trip, should we do a test run earlier to see how we tolerate it?

This might help http://www.fodors.com/forums/threads...p;tid=34766853

took it last year and had no side effects at all

No side effects for us either. But it is a good idea to start a few days before, just in case.

My husband and I have taken Malarone on 2 trips to SE Asia and had NO side effects at all. Make sure your prescription is for enough pills. The first time we used it, my doctor only gave me enough for BEFORE and AFTER--not for during visit! He said we did not need to take it while actually in the area! My pharmacist knew the correct dosage and give us the proper number of pills. Needless-to-say, I changed doctors!

Have taken Malarone in Southeast Asia and my many trips to Africa since it became available (as alternate to Lariam).

No side-effects whatsoever. It's recommended to be taken with food, dairy preferably (yougurt, cheese, milk). Some people may toss the first pill, but I believe the insert says to take another which should stay down. Others may have had tummy upset the first few pills, but afterwards they're fine.

If want to test these before your trip, ask your physician to add 1 or 2 extra pills to take before starting the full protocol as called for (2-days prior arriving in affected area, during and 7-days once returned home) and see how you react. There's no harm in having a few extra pills in your system.

I'm on it at the moment (already for 3 weeks), the first time I've taken it and have experienced no side effects. My husband is taking it too with no problems.

We take it after dinner once a week so don't know if the sleep helps???

WilmaW,
Are you sure you're taking Malarone? It's a daily not once a week pill.

sandi Apr 18th, 2006 11:03 AM

Wilma -

It would seem from the dosage mentioned you are taking Lariam which is a once-a-week pill. Are you taking these prior your safaris or the ones you have to take after returning from safari?

Malarone is a daily pill.

I took this recently before I did some traveling and I was not really aware of the side effects. This is a very informative piece http://sideeffectz.com/malaronesideeffects about the side effects of Malarone.

My DH and I took Malarone for 12 days last year before and after a visit to Siem Reap Cambodia and experienced no side effects whatsoever.

Airline flight crews take Malarone all of the time with no problems.

I noticed a serious side-effect in my wallet. Other than that it was OK.

Will we tell them this post is six years old?

Nah. No fun in that.

pixelpower Feb 17th, 2012 02:51 AM

LOL didn't even notice.

Just picked up a prescription for malarone and was pleasantly surprised to find all I had to pay was a $5 co-pay. I have taken both types before and they weren't covered. Changed coverage at the first of the year though. :)

sandi Feb 17th, 2012 07:27 AM

The date was the first thing I noticed... 6/yrs. old?

Louise - Likely now that Malarone is available as a so-called generic, being produced by another company, as granted by Glaxo Smith Kline... prices with/without a drug plan will be different (lower) as well the copays. We can only hope.

The only possible side affects I ever expreienced from Malerone were a couple of weird dreams. But nothing more than that.

I was almost hoping for strange dreams, but actually saw nothing stranger than usual...

Every time we go to the Travel Clinic the doctor has the same lame joke .... "the worst side effect of Malarone is bankruptcy"
