Malarone: how much did you pay for it ?

We will need at least 3 boxes. Which is the average price in your country ?
I think Italy, where I live, has the highest price, around US$ 70 per box (12 tablets) but I can have the way to have it from US or other EU countries !
What about the local price in SA ?

We purchased our supply just a few days ago here in central Pennsylvania, US and the shelf price was around $63 per 12 tablets. Fortunately, our health insurance picked up most of the tab. Dick

Malarone is expensive. For a two-week trip you need at minimum 23/pills (start taking 2/days prior entering Malaria area, daily while in the area and 7/days upon leaving the affected area), so this can run $100+ depending on where they are purchased.

Thankfully, my drug plan picks up most of the cost.

If you can obtain for a lower price, just be certain it's the real thing and not from some fly-by-night drug company.

$5.47 per pill from a discount pharmacy (USA).

I just paid $5.39 per pill at Costco.

With my co-pay I paid $10.00

I just paid 5.31 each in Canada - my private health insurance told me it was my choice to travel, so I eat the cost.

Last time I had to buy any (about a year ago), I paid about 140 GBP (so approx 280 USD) for 10 boxes, which works out as about 2.3 USD per pill. Expensive, but work was picking up the tab, and better safe than sorry

I paid around 45 euros per pack of 12 tablets in Belgium, if my memory serves me well... but anti-malarials are covered by my health insurance so most of the cost was reimbursed - fortunately!

50 pills - $267.00

The first times I filled the Malarone prescription I used my local grocery store. $10US per pill. Then I read on fodors about people paying less. I made a few phone calls and found it for $5~ per pill. What a savings!

The pharmacist said my insurance company won't pay for Malarone as a preventative. If I get malaria my doctor will prescribe Malarone as the treatment and my insurance company will pay for that.

Blue Shield just told me today that they will pay for Larium or Deoxycycline but not for Malarone!!!!!!!!!!!!
The pharmacy told me 30 Malarone tablets would be $102 if I just paid for them myself. That seems less than what has been written above so maybe I should re-check.

I shopped around and found Costco to be the cheapest. You do not have to be a member to use the pharmacy.

julienk Jul 21st, 2007 05:17 PM

I asked for the prescription during my annual physical. I had a copay of $25 for the 21 pills.

sandi Jul 22nd, 2007 04:02 AM

For recent trip, paid $35 (pharma co-pay) for 26 Malarone tabs and script for Cipro - $25/$10.

I just picked up our Malarone. Paid US $6.15/pill. Insurance would not cover. Seems they must think it would be easier to pay for the treatment for Malaria than for a few pills to prevent the illness!!!!!

As a nurse, that just doesn't make much sense.

Got them at Costco as Blue Shield would not pay for Malarone, but would cover Larium and Deoxycycline. The pharmacy I had originally mentioned gave me a different price, so Costco was best at around $5.61 a tablet.

The Netcare Travel Clinics in South Africa (www.travelclinic.co.za) currently charge R35.50 per tablet for Malarone.

Previously at these clinics the prescription charge used to be built into the price of any tablets, and overall it was a much lower cost than a local doctor's consultation for the prescription plus the filling of the script at a pharmacy. But now although the tablet price is reduced from what I remember, there is a prescription fee of R199 for first-timers, thereafter it would be R87. But possibly still lower than doctor+pharmacy, if that's the only reason for the visit to the doctor.

When I asked the travel doctor what the side effects of Malarone were she replied "bankruptcy"

Shoppers drug mart in ontario is $5.20 per pill (cdn) plus their usual dispensing fee of $11.99 per prescription fill.
