Malaria Prevention Medicine

We are planning on going in Nov. to Zambia. Did you take an anti malarial medication when you went? My Dr. recommended one but it has some very serious side effects and we're not sure what to do. We also don't want to get sick. Please help. Thanks

There are a number of malaria meds available. If your physician was referring to Lariam, you will find numerous comments here on Fodor's and elsewhere where there are side-effects.

Then there is the newer Malarone with few, if any side effect, and this is the one most often recommended.

And, finally for those who can't take the above two there is doxycycline, an antibiotic (though not specifically a malaria preventative).

You should consult the www.cdc.gov site for details re malaria meds and preferrably discuss with a physician familiar with tropical diseases or visit a Travel Clinic for more in depth information.

Whatever, you should be certain to protect yourself against the possibility of malaria with meds and using repellent during mossie biting time and wearing appropriate clothing.

If you do a seach on this board for "malaria" you will find a wealth of information, personal comments and price information. As well, comments from "kavey" re her dads recent bout with malaria. All important reading.
