Malaria & other illnesses

I am going to be in West Africa, Ghana & Togo, in August. I was wondering if anyone is as concerned as I am about getting ill with malaria. I intend to take prophylaxis, & use DEET, but it is not 100%. I plan on bringing a mosquito net to sleep under & be cautious at dusk to dawn in rural areas. Other than that, does anyone have any statistics on contracting this illness?
Am I worrying needlessly?

How long are you going to be there?

A month? a year? If it was a year then I might be concerned. Otherwise just take all those precautions you have outlined. They are very wise.

Just don't travel in the back of a ute with livestock else you might find a sore spot on your body; which gets inflamed, and swells - and eventually - hey, what do you know - out pops a perfectly formed little worm. It's been incubating in your, yes YOUR leg, all that time.

I wouldn't worry.
