making international calls from Israel

Is renting a cell phone in Israel cheaper than making calls from your own phone? I understand there are cell phone operators in the airport and was wondering about costs to the U.S. Also, I saw something about companies sending you the phone before you leave. Any comments, suggestions? Thank you for your help.

I used a calling card and it was incredibly cheap, however that was in 2007. I paid around $5US for the calling card and I made quite a few calls before it ran out. I did this back in the days when cell calls were more expensive but if you find that is still the case, this might be a good back-up plan.

The most expensive option is going to be using your American phone. When you do this the American company takes a nice amount AND the Israeli cell towers that they are using also needs a cut. You can either rent a phone, a sim card ( if your phone is unlocked) or use a calling card in the rapidly diminishing amount of public phones.
