Makgadikgadi Botswana Fire

Just for info a massive fire in Makgadikgadi Pans at the moment.Client are being taken out of the area for safety.

I read that there were fires earlier this month (reports seem dated August 3rd and talk about the previous week) but hadn't realised they hadn't been brought under control and were still raging. How terrifying - one wonders how wide an area has been damaged?

This one started last knight and its in the area of Jacks camp and Makgadikgadi Camp.Waiting for more info from a friend who is trying to save his lodge.

What a nightmare! What's the name of your friend's lodge? How awful! Wishing him luck!

Hello,

Just wanted everyone to know that both Jack's and San are fine - no one at either camp was hurt and neither camp was damaged in the fire.

Cheers,
Julian

Thanks for the updates...

Was the fire damage an issue for the environment or wildlife? I know fires are natural and sometimes in our human desire to manage everything we do more damage - some species need fires to succeed - but I'm wondering if that's the case in this area or not?

Great news, Julian. I "googled" the other day to see what was going on with the fire and the newest info I could find was dated august 3rd.

smacdvanbc Aug 16th, 2006 03:37 PM

Any word on Meno A Kwena Camp?

Kavey Aug 17th, 2006 01:16 AM

Sundowner, those are the reports I found and mentioned earlier in the thread but apparently those fires were put out and the one bots is talking about is a later one... sounds like it's dry as tinder out there...

Hello,

The news from Jack's is that the grassland areas have been pretty badly damaged by the fires, but that the pans are undamaged. The grasslands are expected to regenerate swiftly once the rains come.

All activities are going forward as normal at the camps.

Cheers,
Julian
