Maggie the Ele to leave Alaska
Great News!
The board voted last night to move Maggie the Ele and will now concentrate on getting her fit for the trip south.
Go here for the latest Alaska Daily News story about the boards decision.

I would like to thank all those Fodorites who signed the petition and wrote to the Zoo Board. It all helped to get this change.
Three cheers for Maggie!

That is great news they agreed to move her, but based on the article, it sounds like everyone still needs to be pressuring the zoo to actually make the move happen (note the "if and when" language below):
"Every effort will be made to expedite a move if and when all the factors for a successful move are favorably addressed,” board president Dick Thwaites said in a prepared statement.
Because there are so many criteria to meet, it’s impossible to predict how long it would take to move Maggie..."
I mean, I know you don't just move an elephant overnight but I just don't get it...

What a relief this is - Thanks to Imelda for posting the original thread and to all who signed the petition and wrote to the Directors and government officials - "There is nothing so powerful as an idea thats time has come (Victor Hugo)
Now is the time to write to the Directors of the Zoo and congratulate them on their right decision and to follw the story to ensure they do the right thing.
Loud trumpeting and much excitement!

OK, I KNOW I replied to this thread the other day but it seems to have vanished into cyberspace!
Yes, FANTASTIC news that Maggie will get a new home and I completely agree that we must again e-mail congratulating the board on their decision and keep the pressure up to get her moved asap.

Probably too long a trip but I wish she could go to the elephant sancturary in TN. When you have a moment go to www.elephants.com and see 2500 acrea just for elephants and no tourists. Closest thing to being back home in Africa or Asia. Janet a supporter.

OK Thembi - I just read Jude's posts. It's all too much, really. So hard to comprehend... all of it, all the stories of these captive, abused elephants. Will be tough to get to sleep tonight. But, I do thank you for keeping the news alive for everyone to read.

I don't know if everyone knows this BUT ... Maggie is going to California ... and soooner rather than later thankfully!!
Apparently she's well and fit for travel and they should have the details ironed out within a couple of weeks so fingers crossed.

Sharon, Yes, I fully intend to e-mail the Zoo along with all the other 'powers that be' that I previously e-mailed - it's good to give praise too as maybe 'next time' it will go somewhere towards quickening the decision making...let's hope I'll be sending that e-mail soon!
Carla, that's great news about San Diego Zoo - hopefully more zoos will follow suit.

Maggie is in California!!!!!!
At long last she's where she needs to be. The journey went well and she's in her own area adjoining the other Ellies. There's even a webcam here where you can see her when she wanders out -
