Madikwe Wild Dogs

Since in the past there has been some discussion about seeing wild dogs in Madikwe, I thought that there might be some interest in an article about them in today's Christian Science Monitor: http://www.csmonitor.com/2005/0921/p16s01-sten.html

Thanks, Cokie! (Although the part about putting them in zoos is a bit disconcerting....)

Cooncat,

I may be able to put your mind at rest about putting the dogs in zoos. The AZA (American Zoo and Aquarium Association) accredited zoos that are interested in these dogs are talking about dogs that are already in zoos, not dogs from the wild.

African Wild Dogs are under a Species Survival Plan that manages the population of dogs currently in AZA accredited zoos. These SSPs have many goals, but one is to, where possible, reintroduce animals to restored or secure habitats. The zoo I used to work for did this successfully with red wolves.

That's probably way more than you wanted to know, but I hope it clears it up for you.
