We'll be spending 3 nights days in Luxor at the Winter Palace.
One of our days is free.

We will have already been to Karnak Temple, Luxor Temple, VOTK, Hapshetsut Temple.

Any suggestions of things to do on that free day? "un-touristy" things to do are of particular interest. Arts/Crafts are of interest.

We don't have a guide for that day, but if w're going out into the city is a guide advisable? Can the front desk/consierge at the Winter Palace make those arrangements if we decide at the last minute?

Of course, the Winter Palace grounds seem to be enough to keep someone pretty busy, too.

Is it 3 nights, or 3 days? 4 nights would give you 3 full days and if you have just 3 nights you have enough, in my experience, already. If you have time on the day you're at Hatshepsut's temple, I recommend stopping at Howard Carter's house, very nearby.

Other things you don't mention which I enjoyed are the Luxor Museum, located facing the river between Karnak & Luxor Temples. Also taking the ferry across the river to the west bank, not a whole lot of particular interest but I enjoyed the ferry ride over and back and walking around. You'll likely be the only non-local on the ferry.

There's a local market as well as the tourist souk east of Luxor Temple and a narrow pedestrian street, locally called Gold Street, because of the shops selling gold jewelry, all within walking distance of the Winter Palace.

Or, if you're pool people, have lunch at the restaurant alongside the pool and just swim & lounge there for a few hours, very pleasant.

Another fun place to have lunch not far from your hotel is Al-Sahaby restaurant on the roof of the Nefertiti Hotel on Sahaby street. A right turn out of your hotel on the same side of the road will get you there. Look for a sign on the sidewalk and an alley off to the right into the souk with tables, but find the door to the stairs to the roof. On a clear day you can see Hatshepsut's Temple and I enjoyed the food. Be sure to try "fresh lemon juice" (like lemonade) at any restaurant you go to. I became quite addicted.

Another thing, because I passed on Valley of the King's/Queens for a couple of reasons, I visited other West Bank sites that may not be on your guide's list of usual requests. One I liked very much was Medinat Habu, Ramsis III's mortuary temple. The countryside in the neighborhood is pleasant, the site is beautiful and a bit off the beaten path so you'll likely have it almost to yourself.

We stayed at the Winter Palace in May 2016. We really liked it. I had arranged our trip through a travel agent, and we spent one afternoon sailing on a felucca. We had the boat to ourselves with the crew of two. The sailing was great. The boat, we sailed on, and many others are moored right in front of the Winter Palace. I would think that the hotel could help you with the arrangements.

A felucca ride at sunset sounds delightful. I imagine the concierge at the Winter Palace can arrange things.
