Luggage restrictions-Kenya? Diani Beach?
 

Hi,
We are leaving on Safari in 2 weeks. When we went to Botswana we were told about luggage weight limits but once there, they let us and our luggage on all of the planes. I am wondering how strict are they in Kenya? We are staying at all Porini lodges, so transportation will involve getting to their camps.Also, has anyone been to Diani Beach recently? Any thoughts?

SafariLink at Wilson Airstrip in Nairobi does weigh luggage when you check in. The first time there, I had to shuffle things from my heavy bag to a lighter carryon. The second time I packed under the weigh limit and was fine. I've gone with Porini on safari and they use Safarilink to get from Nairobi to camps, so I'd be sure to stay under the weight limit.

In addition to weight requirements, I recall a requirement of soft-sided luggage. That allows more compacting/ rearranging of bags (and piling them atop each other) in the small luggage hold areas of the planes.
Like AmyB, I've stayed in Porini Camps (in my case, Rhino in Ol Pejeta, and Lion in one of the MM area conservancies). I predict you'll have a fantastic time!!!
Can't help with Diani--was last there in 1971.

Thank you for the feedback. I have a soft sided piece of luggage but it is not a duffle. It is the type on 4 wheels. Do you think that will be ok?

I used this on my last safari (I hated carrying a duffle on the first two) and this allowed me to travel carry-on only and it worked out fine transiting in airports and on the small flights in Kenya. It's extremely lightweight and held much more than I expected.

I used something similar to AmyB's--it was soft-sided, had 4 wheels.It was from eBags My grandson used a large zippered duffle bag. Both were fine for all local flights Safarilink and TropicAir (whose planes are even smaller than SafariLink)

What was weighed at Wilson Airport did NOT include the large handbag I carried. During boarding at Nanyuki ( nr Ol Pejeta--if you're staying at Porini Rhino Camp) and for two separate trips from airstrips in the Mara, none of the luggage was weighed. It was inconsistent, and it seemed a "guesstimate" method was used sometimes.

I just got back and at Wilson they weighed my duffle and my small backpack I was carrying on. The plane was full and so they were strict about weight. I used a duffle--no wheels because they add weight.

When I went through Wilson this past summer they weight my duffle plus my small backpack carryon. The only thing they did not weigh was my camera around my neck. I suggest wearing your heaviest clothes, shoes. But they were strict about weight. It all depends upon how full your plane is. Like a previous poster, no wheels on luggage for me because it adds weight. Your guides will take care of your luggage once you land.
