library at Alexandria

I will be in Cairo for 36 hours between flights. I would like to visit the Library at Alexandria. Are there tours? Is it best to hire a driver? Is it feasible given the current security restrictions?

Along the lines of what I was thinking. But after googling, there is a new library in Alexandria so, giving the benefit of the doubt, I'll assume that's what's referred to. In answer to the question, given all there is to see in Cairo, I'd opt to stay in Cairo. The (new) library in Alex cannot be as interesting as the historic sites unless, I suppose, one is on a busman's holiday. I've been known to tour libraries myself but didn't with 3 days in Cairo.

You all must read the new book by Susan Orlean: The Library Book -- It details the huge fire in 1986 of the Los Angeles library, just fascinating. NYT's review probably online.

Yes, the new library.

I have been to Cairo 2x. Both times the library has been unavailable - once because the staff was on strike; once due to security issues. Hoping the 3rd time works.

I'm on the reserve list for it at my local library, sounds like it's worth the wait.

We visited the new Library in Alexandria last March. It is an aesthetically interesting building. The interior was beautiful. If you are interested in libraries then I would say go for it. Make a long day of it. Visit the Citadel, have a great seafood lunch. I would recommend a guide, due to the security issues currently.
