Leopard vs Hyena Video

Hi Guys
Here is a short video of mine of a male leopard killing an Impala Ram and then after putting up a rather courageous fight loses his kill to Hyenas.
Enjoy. If you want more let me know.

Too bad the leopard couldn't make it up the tree. He would have been able to keep his kill

Marksafari17 Oct 24th, 2006 12:41 PM

Amazing.

Hi Mark,

Again, I feel as if that vehicle is way too close. I am hoping that the spotlight was not on that impala to begin with, otherwise it had no chance! A predator needs to see in all directions clearly, and it seemed as if the vehicle blocked off the leopard's view.

It was a shame that the leopard could not make it up the tree, all that effort for nothing!

I feel very strongly about giving all the big cats and their prey an even chance, not always possible I know, but if a vehicle gets too close, it needs to back off to give the predator space. I also love the action photos, but certainly not at the expense of a life.

Kind regards,

Kaye

Hi Kaye
We did not spotlight the impala before the kill. We were following the leopard for quite a while and when he came up to the impala and went into stalk mode we swithed off all our lights and sat in total darkness listening. When we heard the thump of the kill we then switched on our lights and moved in. Everything was perfectly ligit. If you notice the leopard actually dragged the carcass towards us and we then moved out of his way.

Wow, amazing! So close to your vehicle - a bit scary. The leopard didn't seem to put up much of a fight - were there more hyenas that we couldn't see besides the 2.
Thanks for sharing.

Hi Mark

Wow,great video-are you still filming with the Canon?

Was that Jaco's voice I heard?

Thanks for sharing!

Marksafari17 Oct 28th, 2006 05:45 AM

cybor
There were actually 3 leopards and this was just a bit too much for him. No point in getting injured.

safarinut
Howzit Duanne. Yes, I am still filming with the Canon. I would like to get the new HDV but we will see as this camera is still very good. Yes, that was Jaco's voice. In a couple of hours time we are heading up to Talamati for 4 nights. Be great if you were here to join us.

I am now in Skukuza. Spent last night at Talamati but in 37 degrees C without a swimming pool nor air-conditioning it just ain't worth it. It did rain this afternoon bringing down the temp to 22 which was a blessing and as I right I am sitting on the banks of the Sabie River enjoying a sundowner.
