Wouldn't recommend that approach - if a security guard happens to see this they may well assume that you are being given something to carry that doesn't belong to you - could be drugs, dangerious materials etc - and might not let you through and onto the flight!

What may I expect to fit in the photo vest that I mentioned?
Would the following be possible?
(2) Canon 20d bodies
Sigma 17-85mm lens
Sigma 1.4x teleconvertor
Canon dual battery charger
(6) Canon batteries
Sigma EF-500 Super Flash
Due to the strict weight limitations, I have resigned myself to accept that there is no possible way I can afford to bring along the Sony F707 point and shoot camera.
The only thing that I will pack in my suitcase that has some importance are the binoculars, the monopod and the tripod. I would love to pack the Sigma 80-400mm lens but I am scared about theft and about damage to the lens.
My wife already will be carrying the laptop (5 pounds) in a carryon bag, along with a few magazines. If I could get her to carry the Sigma 80-400mm lens that would be a tremendous help to me and would leave only the following items in the camera backpack, if I was, in fact able to carry the rest of the stuff, temporarily in my photo vest:
BACKPACK
Sigma 70-200mm lens (3 pounds?)
CF Cards (3 ounces?)
Filters (8 ounces?)
Lens hoods (12 ounces?)
Computer cords (8 ounces?)
Blank DVD's (about 10)(6 ounces?)
Giotto Rocket Blaster (4 ounces?)
Lens cleaning kit (4 ounces?)
2 books (one digital photography, one novel)(2 pounds)
I think if I am able to stick closely to the above, that I may be okay. One more reason now to try to fly Business Class on all flights now. Had I been in business class on Virgin Atlantic, I would have been allowed more than double the weight of carry on luggage!
The weight issue has been the biggest downer and is really killing my high.

How about buying an extra vest for Aleksandra and putting some (lighter) stuff in it?
Cheers,
Julian

Aehhem, I guess Aleksandra won't find this appealing, Julian.
Rocco, PLEASE, could you make a photo of you in full gear at the airport, maybe in 'Grand Pooh-Bah of Mauritania' pose?!?

Although I got into this chat late
, Hope you have had a great trip!
I am wanting to do such trip since about three years ago, when the company was about to send me over there for a business trip and then the Irak war started and travel was banned by the company! Now I have a 3-year-old son and other coming on his/her way, so I guess I'll have to wait for a while....
Anyway, I'll be more than happy to read about your trip adventures and have a look to your pictures, so if you have posted them anywehere, please let me know
Cheers, Carlos

Carlos,
Thanks for your interest. Sorry to hear about your company's position on travel. Just set your mind to it, try to save a little money and I am sure you will get to Africa in the next few years.
Here are my photo galleries. I am just including my entire webpage on Kodak Gallery. Click on my September and October galleries and that is where my photos from Zambia and the Sabi Sand will be located.
