Carrie, that is so funny! I keep getting the urge to write my own phrase book that has just the phrases I think will be helpful.
The in-flight CD is good for simple greetings and polite phrases, but doesn't include other things I want such as:
"may I take your picture?", or phrases to use when talking to children. Or how to ask for food to be served very hot (i.e. avoiding the lukewarm stuff that breeds bacteria).

On the other hand, it includes lots of things that would be useful for reference in a phrase book, but that I'm not going to expend the brainpower to memorize, such as info on getting around an airport.
When I went to Turkey I got a wonderful tape series called 'getting by in Turkish' which did an even better job at teaching you just a little bit, but making it really practical. For example, within the first 1/2 hour lesson you learned to go into a cafe, give a polite greeting, and order 1 beer, 2 coffees (with or without milk which could be hot or cold), and 3 cups of tea.

lala salama - sleep well
duma - cheetah
madoadoa - cheetah
hakuna matata - no problem
pole pole - slow(ly)

for more you can join www.bushdrums.com FOC. The site ( founded by 2 Kenya cowboys who might publish a whole lot of phrases and/or words for you) is dedicated towards East Africa but deals also with all sorts of topics mostly related to Africa.
