LAX to Dubai on Emirates!!

Just read in the LA Times that this route will be opening.

I wish I was going back to Africa right now. I need to come up with a trip just so I can take this flight.

Wayne, bring a book -- how long is that flight? Which way do they fly -- over the Pacific or Atlantic?

Wayne, you're really a glutton for punishment aren't you . Flying just for the fun of it. Oh, but wait, I forgot, you always fly first class, never mind.

Wayne - Good news, but I already feel your pain.

I did the 12/hrs Emirates from NYC (last year) and that almost kicked my butt! As with most pain, you soon forget, but I remember. Regardless which way they fly... bring a big big book! or lots of drugs.

I'd been on long flights before, i.e., JFK/JNB which was close to 16/hrs; over the pole 13/hrs to NRT on way to BKK*; 15/hrs SFO/SYD.

*though Singapore Air now does this non-stop JFK/BKK, believe 18/hrs... I don't think so, if I ever return.

Wayne... you do like to punish yourself! What do they call that? Maso or Sado?

I think the flight is 16 hours. I always bring reading material. I could finishing a No. 1 Ladies Detective book during that flight and still have time for napping and a movie.

Who says I always fly first class? I wish I did that. Emirates will feel like first class even in coach.

I gotta' be on the press corps for Emirates

Gardy - great map/site.

Guess question should have been whether they fly east or west.

From NY, while not actually over the pole, they did take the farthest northern route... just narrower up that way. Strange to look at the route on the screen and see ourselves coming over Moscow and Baghdad on the way towards DXB.

Either the pain of a long flight or a connection out of Europe. Next time I will take the long flight.

I flew from LA to Aucklund a few years ago...I think it was 13-14 hours. My recollection is that I had 2 HANGOVERS on the flight. Bring a laptop and Advil.

I was in Dubai in Feb. '06. There was so much going on that I feel the need to return just to see how much change has occured.

Dubai - JFK is about 14 hours or so! Can't think of how much longer the CA routes will take!!!

Emirates also to start flying to Durban later in the year and they have just started the Cape Town route. Don't know if this helps anyone!

Spent a 6 week period flying 10 or 11 hour flights about every other day. Logged over 250 hours in the air. It was for research and when we were flying it was exactly like working on the ground except you couldn't go outside to eat lunch.

Here is a picture of our plane:

and the interior:

Under those conditions, long duration flying is actually quite enjoyable.

Like Wayne, I always travel in 1st class .

But should you ever get to fly 1st on Emirates, I would think a longer flight would be better - more time to enjoy all the amenities.

I actually get disappointed when the SFO-LHR flight time is short and I'm in Upper Class on Virgin.

But that's me.

Napamatt,

Their skywards program is about the best I've experienced and very simple to upgrade to F or whatever! Especially, once you get to their Upper Tiers. I would think you will enjoy those SFO-DBX flights (the entire 100 hours flight time )........

That new Durban flight from November is very interesting. The only thing I found with Emirates that I didn't like was the 3x4x3 seating in Coach on their 777's, when others only have 9 across. Otherwise though food etc excellent.

Just returned from a most relaxing 12-hr. Emirates flight, Dubai-Shanghai. Business class food and service were top-notch and there was ample time for sleep. On long-haul flights, comfort certainly makes all the difference! Warning: Emirates Coach (Airbus) is torture -sardine city!
