Lava!

I know this isn't Africa related but thought some of my friends here would enjoy seeing what's going on on my island. I went out to see the lava today, it was AWESOME!

Wowee...great pictures! It looks like you were right next to the flow. How long has the volcanoe been flowing?

thit_cho Mar 9th, 2008 07:14 AM

Dennis, great photos -- I was on the big island in 1998 and didn't see much flowing lava (we were able to see some from the helicopter, while being serenaded by Elvis through the headphones). I wasn't able to get any of those great, bright orange, up-close photos.

Seeimg that hot lava warmed me up after I came in from the cold blowing snow tracking coyotes on snowshoes. I saw one. Now I'm in the mood to hula!

Momliz Mar 9th, 2008 02:32 PM

incredible! I loved the one with the heat waves coming up. How close were you? Must have been hot!

LyndaS Mar 9th, 2008 10:52 PM

That was aa-wesome, Dennis! Is that near Kalapana?

(hope I have my type of lava correct :-) )

MyDogKyle Mar 10th, 2008 09:58 AM

Ah, nice! Thanks for posting those. I love the Big Island -- it's different every time you go! :)

Patty Mar 10th, 2008 10:07 AM

Great pics, Dennis!

Lynda,
Wrong type but it's hard to make a pun out of pahoehoe!

atravelynn Mar 10th, 2008 03:54 PM

I hope you were using telephoto.

Leely Mar 10th, 2008 05:30 PM

Dennis, I have *never* seen lava looking like that before! Whoah.

matnikstym Mar 12th, 2008 07:05 PM

Sorry to be late in resonding but was on the mainland for 4 days, just got back.
Thanks for your comments!
MonicaH~the flow started last Tuesday and by Saturday they had the road cleared and ready for the viewing...though during that time it covered about 1/4 mile of the road, pushing back the viewing area. Since Saturday it's done it again and it changes daily. As of today there is not much to see on the ground as I saw, but it is visible going into the ocean, which I didn't see.
Lynn~I'd love to see a coyote but without trekking in the snow! After living in Hawaii for 15 years, don't think I could tolerate the cold. Photos were from my S-3, we were that close.
Momliz-about 6-10 feet from the "red" stuff. You could sure feel the heat, thought my camera was going to melt.
LyndaS~yes near Kalapana and Patty is right it's pahoehoe...a'a is the rough lava, pahoehoe is the smooth as in the pics.

Dennis:

We were staying at our condo at Waikoloa. We drove to your side of the island and parked at Kalapana on Friday. They said they were not going to open the road until the next day. We tried to walk along the coast to see but gave up about halfway. Brush was just too thick along the pig trail. We did not feel like driving the two hours each to see the next day. We had seen in years past. Glad you were able to go. We flew back to California on Sunday. Mahalo for the photos.

Went back out to the flow last night and it was incredible-fountains 30-40 feet high. Thought I'd share some more pics:

Hey mat, I really enjoyed your first set of pics but I can't open the second. :-( Do you have another link I can try?

cw Jul 12th, 2008 01:55 PM

Those are amazing photos. Some almost look like pictures of fireworks.

This may be a stupid question, but does the lava make noise when it flows? Crackling from the heat type noise?

Thanks for posting. What a show!

Patty Jul 14th, 2008 10:02 AM

P_M,
I was able to get to the photos. Did you click on "proceed to the site" or something like that from the tinyurl site?

Patty Jul 14th, 2008 10:04 AM

Very cool, Dennis!

matnikstym Jul 14th, 2008 07:34 PM

cw~yes it kind of crackles as it moves.
P-M~don't know what to tell you, everyone else has managed to open them up. Wish I had an answer.
Patty~ Thanks! next time you come to Honolulu you should come on over to the Big Island for one of my personalized tours!
