KwaZulu Natal - 1 night in Ballito or Uhmlanga?

There is an oldish thread about this on TripAdvisor, so I thought I would get Fodor opinions as well.

We will be flying into Durban around 4 pm and want to spend just 1 night near the airport before we head out for several days in KZN.

So, Ballito or Uhmlanga? We are middle aged, don't want to spend a bunch, but would enjoy a mid-priced meal in a nice spot with plenty of local beer. We will leave early the next morning so a luxurious B&B isn't necessary.

Ballito is nicer than Uhmlanga IMO. Al Pescatori restaurant in Ballito is very nice with sea views. Having said that there are some nice B&Bs in Uhmlanga eg Sylvan Grove where we stayed one year, but you need transportation to get to the Uhmlanga centre where all the restaurants/bars are etc. Salt Rock Hotel is in a lovely spot.

For the airport you actually need to between Umhlanga Rocks and Ballito at Umdloti (right on the beach and closer to the airport. Go for Fairlight Beach House, Umdloti (right on the sea and various room categories) - www.fairlight.co.za and have dinner in Umdloti at 'Bel Punto' overlooking the sea, great menu and lots of beer (!) www.belpunto.co.za. Enjoy!
