Kruger NP on a budget

We will have a week at Kruger NP. We will have accommodation at the south of the park, and a rental car for the week. How can we make best use of the week, hopefully see the "big 5", and learn as much as possible without spending a fortune? How do morning walking safaris, morning game drives, and night game drives, etc compare? What do you think are the best value? Is R830 per person incl breakfast reasonable for a morning walking safari in a private game reserve?

In the Park itself, you have accommodatiosn at all levels of expense. Does the R830 include the lodging, food and a guided ranger game drive? If so, that is extermely reasonable. If it's just breakfast and a guided game drive, maybe not so reasonable. Suggest you buy a copy of the Fodors Southern Africa book and read the section on Kruger. It will advise you about the various strategies you may use. At the currect rate, of cousre, ZAR830 is under $100. If you were to stay at a private place outside the park, your expenses would start around $300 plus or minus, depending on the season. And it could go up to $800 or so, pp, per day. You would be well advised to use a ranger if you want to have a chance of seeing the Big Five - it takes a pro to find and spot game. Go in their vehicle, leave your own parked - so you'll be free to look.

The price only includes a walking safari plus breakfast. We'll have our own accommodation. I think the price is probably quite reasonable for a private game park, but we are on a fairly tight budget so we are still considering any other options. Thank you for answering, RnR! I'm still trying to find a Fodors guidebook. Cheers!
