Kondoa-Irangi rock art? Anyone visited?
In an attempt to get a little off the beaten path, while reading the Rough Guide, they mention this as one of their "top 18 things not to miss" in TZ.
Searching this thread did not come up with much, but Eben made mention of a possible visit a few years ago. Anyone with information? Thank you again for all the great information which is really a huge help in planning our trip. |
Its about 4 to 5 hours drive from Tarangire so you can do a two day trip with overnight camping

Hi
A number of years ago I visited Kondoa with my family while on a trip to Tanzania. It was a rough trip (road) but was very worthwhile!!! The rock art was fascinating and the country side and river valley very interesting. If you are interested in these things it is well worth making the effort to go. Another place we visited was the Stone Age site near Iringa in central Tanzania. This was one of my best experiences in Tanzania!!!! If you are interested in archeology this is a fantastic place to visit!! |

I havent yet visited Kondoa yet but went to the site near Iringa. It is called Isimila If your interested in history it is a must As you are walking along the dry river bed you cant help but notice the hundreds of Stone Age tools under your feet. |
Thank you for the great information.
Anyone else? Also, any more rock art locations on the northern circuit? |
Keep in mind that the road from Makuyuni to Dodoma is on slate to being repaved in the next year or so, which will make the drive to Kondoa an easy ride......

Great info, Andy. Thought the cultural aspect of this area sounded really different and interesting. Plus the rock drawings are a facination for me.
Thank you. |
Let me alter my post a bit. I didn't mean 'repaved', but rather 'paved for the firs time'.
