Thanks for the input.

Now the air is a horrible price. It pays to think about all this over a year in advance!!

Back to googling air fares!!

One comment about prices - make sure your porters and guides are paid fairly and are also well-equipped. One thing I liked about Tusker is that their porters are all very well paid and they all had good equipment on the climb - proper clothing, their own tents (i.e. didn't have to sleep in the dining tent), good sleeping bags and pads, etc. A lot of cut rate companies will skimp on how they provision the porters.

Phil I bought 3 sets of base layers: Terramar silk, Wickers poly, and Terramar woolskins. Also got two long sleeve shirts with high SPF.
Yes, the airfares are high this year. It's being blamed on the World cup.

Hi Philbill,
try contacting African Travel Inc 1 800 421 8907
Brena at ext 157

I think they're a discounter outfit, and a friend of mine who's a travel agent used them to get my tickets. I got $2400 from LAX to JRO then home from Kigali to LAX on Ethiopian Air.

If you're doing a straight round trip instead of an open jaw it should cost less, and if you're flexible with dates you might get a better deal, or maybe you could use a different airline.

My stuff from STP arrived today! It's really nice. The Columbia shirts are gorgeous, and I think I'll really like wearing the pink silk longjohns The Mountain Hardwear hiking pants are top quality-think I'll get another pair.

About oxygen on Kili: Lots of outfitters carry some. It's only minimally helpful though, because the problem isn't lack of oxygen in the air--it's still 21%. The problem is the decrease in air pressure causes temporary pulmonary hypertension and makes it hard for the oxygen to cross the lung membranes. It's a problem of oxygen transport, not availability.

If you develop HAPE, you need to descend promptly. Oxygen will help you once you are down, but is not a substitute for descent.

I'm not a climber, so you can take my advice with a grain of salt, but I spent two weeks in Moshi last summer, and of course one of the main topics of conversation was climbing Kilimanjaro. The local consensus seemed to be that the biggest mistake was trying to save money by doing the shorter climb rather than allowing an extra acclimatization day.

Thanks Ann. We have decided that the 7 day 6 night is what we are going to do.
We also want one full day at the hotel before we start the climb (having read other people's comments).

Climbing Kilimanjaro is one of the most rewarding experiences you might ever have the chance to do. It’s actually quite a bit different from climbing Everest or any other mountaineering experience. There are typically no mountaineering equipment involved, and most anyone in good physical shape has a great chance or reaching the summit if they plan carefully, even with no real previous climbing experience. It’s basically like a long hike.
