Kilimanjaro climb and safari

In Sept.and Oct. 2005 a few of us are going to Africa to climb Mt. Kilimanjaro and want to combine it with a safari(s) and a few days in Zanzibar. There are many routes, safaris, and companies to select from. I would like some feedback on Kili routes and companies, safari experience, etc. My wife and a friend will not be climbing Kili. Any suggestions on where two 60+ women can safely spend 5 to 6 days?

Let's start with Kili.

In Sept/Oct the weather is pretty good so all routes can be used.

There are 2 ways to reach the summit. From the East or from the West.

From the East, there are two approaces - from Barafu Camp or from Kibo Camp. The Kibo Camp approach is used by climbers using the Rongai and Marangu routes. The Barafu Camp approach is used Machame, Umbwe, Lemosho and Shira routes.

All Eastern approaches leave the camps before midnight for the very steep and ice cold final push to the summit. A 6-8 hour struggle in the dark on ground that feels like a huge sand dune. Two steps forward and sliding back a step! This is tough!

The Western Approach is via Arrow Glacier Camp and the Western Breach. This can also be done at night but strongly discouraged. This route is best done during day time hours. You will then camp near the summit before making a final push of 90 minutes the next morning.

How do they compare? The Western Breach is much more spectacular than the other routes because you climb during the day - not at night!

The Breach is very doable - most outfitters on this route have 95%+ success rates, at least one has a 100% summit success rate in 2004! It is the route of the IMAX movie - To the roof of Africa.

Top Breach outfitters are Tusker, Mountain Madness, The Kiliwarriors & Thompsons.
