Kenya Visa Problems

We called the Kenya embassy in Washington D.C. and were told that it was better to get our Visas in advance of arrival. There are long lines at the airport and we are arriving late at night. Our traveling companions in Germany received the same advice from their Kenya embassy. My husband went to pick up the Visas yesterday and found out that we had been given the wrong information (surprise, surprise). Instead of our airplane tickets, they want an itineary from a travel agency. When he showed them the printed itineary from the front of the ticket, they said that they needed an 8 1/2 X 11 itineary from a travel agency. Since we are flying in on frequent flier tickets, we aren't sure what to do. Anyone successfully run this gauntlet? Any experience with agencies which get the Visas for you (looks like an additional $40 charge per person)?

Hi Olivia,
Thanks for emailing me, but I think you are wrong, I hope anyway, the article you quote from the US State dept. on Kenya visas is not country specific. Go back to the same site and go to Visas then to US citizens visiting other countries and then to Kenya and you will see that (no visa) necessary for US or UK citizens staying less than 30 days. I think your German friends need one but you don't unless you are staying longer than 30 days. Hope this clears it if for you and all of us as it is causing much confussion for people getting ready to go to Kenya, Have a good trip, I am leaving from SFO, on March 16th with no visa, buck

Sorry to give you the bad news. The U.S. state department consular information sheet issued on February 9, 2001 for Kenya clearly states that visas ARE required. This was confirmed by the Kenya embassy here in Nairobi and in Germany, and our travel agent in Nairobi (Let's Go Travel) as well as several visa service agencies. Unfortunately, not all web sites, including Kenya's own site are sufficiently updated.

I just returned from Kenya, I paid for my visa when I landed in Nairobi. I wasn't in the line for more than 10 mins. They took US cash, it was all pretty routine and painless.
