Kenya Safe from Asian Tsunami

Please see below for a statement from the Kenya Tourist Board on the effects in Kenya on the recent tragic Asian Tsunami:

"Following the earthquake and tsunami in South East Asia on December 26th 2004, the coast of Kenya only experienced unusually high swells, and choppy conditions on that afternoon, with tidal surges and higher than normal waves. We were in communication with the Seychelles, who were experiencing high waves and heavy swells. Based on this useful information, our tourist hotels on the Kenyan coast warned guests to be cautious and to stay out of the sea and off the beach in the afternoon.

By the afternoon of December 26th all hotels on the Kenyan coast had been alerted and had taken the necessary action to secure their facilities and ensure the safety of their guests. All tourists at Kenyan coastal resorts are safe and unhurt. Damage from the incident was limited to local fishing boats, mainly around Malindi.

The Kenya Tourist Board has subsequently been in contact with hoteliers and tour operators all along the coast from Lamu to Watamu to Mombasa to Diani and areas of the South Coast, and all confirm that everything is back to normal with no damage to the resorts. No resorts have been adversely affected in any way from this incident. Hotel guests are swimming and snorkeling and fishing boats are operating as usual.

Whilst we join the world-wide travel industry in the shock and sorrow felt after the tragic events of Sunday, December 26th, the Kenya Tourist Board would like to reassure all passengers traveling to Kenya that everything remains normal and no resorts here have been adversely affected in any way.
