Kenya or Botswana

I promised my daughter a trip to Africa when she graduates. She wants to experience a place and culture different from her own in a US suburb. We can only afford to go to either Kenya or Botswana but not both. We may be able to combine Tanzania with Kenya and South Africa with Botswana.

If you have been to both, which would you recommend to us? Thank you!

What a choice!! I have been on safari in Kenya (Masai Mara and Amboseli) and Botswana (Okavango Delta, Moremi and Chobe), but for my first safari I selected Kenya because I wanted to see the migration. You will see many more animals in Kenya, but you will also see more vehicles. Kenya is not as exclusive, or expensive, as Botswana. Really, though, you could flip a coin and pick because both destinations are incredible.

Jared:

We have chosen Botswana in September because it is less crowded and more authentic.

National Geographic and other specials on the Dicovery channel have been filmed in Botswana. Plus it is the most stable African country right now. With all this talk of possible war and terrorism, it seems safer to go to Botswana.

I have been told that it is a little more difficult to track the animals in Botswana, but that makes it more fun when you go offroading and see them..
We will be there for ten days. Surely we will see something good during that time.

One bad thing is that Botswana does not have Rhinos and there are not that many areas that allow night game drives.

Kenya has very few rhinos, but they can definitely be seen in the Lewa Downs area. Better chance of seeing Cheetah in Kenya also.

Having daid that, Botswana seems to have better Hippo and Buffalo sightings.

We decided on a luxury mobile-tented safari, which will also be more of an authentic experience than going to a lodge.

I hope to go to Kenya at some point, BUT it seems musch riskier right now than going to Botswana.

Ingrid :-)

Just a quick note to let you know that Mombo have been reintroducing white rino to the Moremi area over recent months...

:)

Am hoping to spot some in 2004!
