Kenya: luggage and people weight limits

Can anyone tell me what the deal is with the weight limits for your luggage in the small bush planes in Kenya? And, what is the deal with individual people and weight limits..do you get weighed before getting on a plane to see how many people are allowed on that aircraft, or how does it work exactly?

Hi Tracy,
We went on two safaris to Kenya and both times we used those small planes several times. I think that a weight limit is 15 kilos. But you need to check with your supplier. One time they took under consideration our carry-on when we were flying out from Nairobi. Other times they picked us up from a small airstrips or tiny airport where there are no such facilities. It is important that you have your luggage in the soft-sided bags.
Only times when we got weighed it was in Costa Rica, never in Kenya. If you are using small planes you will have all booked so there are not going be any other people on a plane but your party. Unless you are going with a group but then 4-seater planes won't be used. In our case there were only two of us, except from and to Nairobi when we used Air Kenya. What camps are you planning to visit? Maybe I can tell you more details about specific airstrips.

By the way, our luggage (two duffle bags) is always below limits as we learned to pack light. Every camp has laundry and some of the camps provide such service for no extra cost.
I hope this helps.

Thanks for the info. The reason I ask about the weight limit for individuals is because there are 4 of us going to Masai Mara and I don't want any surprises if they ask us to step up on a scale before boarding the aircraft! Have you been to Kichwa Tembo camp? Can you tell me anything about it?
