Kenya Election Riots
Apparently the uncertainty of the results coupled with charges of voting fraud in the recent Kenyan election is causing riots. I hope this won't affect travel to Kenya. I hope they resolve this situation soon ...and peacefully. http://www.nytimes.com/2007/12/30/wo...amp;ei=5087%0A

I hope this is solved in a fair way and that there’s no more violence.

Kibaki has been declared winner and I’m not convinced at all that he got the most votes.
|
Mwai Kibaki has been declared a winner so will Raila concede ? Let's watch now .
|
Ok...now I am freaked out. I am leaving for Kenya on Thursday. What do you all think? I have a driver and everything. I am staying at the House of Waine for one night and then heading to Rwanda. We eventually return to NBO to go to Bateleur. Thoughts?

We will be in Kenya soon .. personally I'm wearing an "Obama for President" shirt and hoping for the best ... both sides love him :) Bill |

Stay in your Karen hotel {& don't walk along the shadowy alleys of Kibera ...;-)} aby i've been there even in the time of the Coup d'etat against Moi - it's better not to stay in the center of town |
Bill
if further riots build up try to stay out of Nairobi center (not in Hilton or Stanley etc') Naivasha is a good option 90 km out aby |
Welcome to Africa. The losers always riot as that is their custom.
|
Is Karen in the center? Or is it a good location given the riots? Do I have to worry about traveling to the hotel?
This trip is starting to feel like it is not meant to be. Thanks. |
if further riots build up
try to stay out of Nairobi center (not in Hilton or Stanley etc') How about the Serena? I think that's where we are, arriving late the first night, leaving mid-morning the final day of our trip. |
Bill,
The Serena is in city center as well. If I recall correctly (from staying there a few years back), it's only about a five minute walk to the city center from the hotel. Most of the bigger "known" hotels are located near each other within the city center. I'm arriving in NBO on the evening of Jan 17th, and staying at the Fairview. FWIW, as long as the riots are confined within the "poorer" areas away from city center, I think everyone should be OK. |
But how does the House of Waine fit in? It is located in Karen. Thanks.
|
Karen is far from the centre and the Serena is almost in the centre.
Latest news is that all live media broadcast has been banned in Kenya. |
If I were you I would go but I'd not spend any time in Nairobi. The game parks should be unaffected.
My daughter is there right now. She lives in Bungoma, in the Peace Corps, but fortunately went to the coast for Christmas and was there when this began. She's on the coast now indefinitely. Her 25th birthday is Tuesday and this will probably be one she'll remember. She's emailing frequently. All is calm where she is, but we're all very glad she's not in Bungoma. |
This should not be taken as warning not to travel to Kenya but guys get serious with the situation . I am in cintact with people on the ground from bungoma,Eldoret and the rest what they are saying is it is very tense. The guy has been sworn in but that does not mean that the show is over .I would like to ask you to be very carefull whenever you are in Kenya for sure . If I were you I would have waited for a week long before I visit the Country .

Tanzanian-
What do you suggest folks do who are leaving in the next few days/week who have already paid for their trip, have their flights and itineraries/reservations set, and have taken the time off of work to go? And does anyone know if travel insurance will cover canceling a trip due to something like the riots? |
We-Mwega Mwangi
Natya? So, you've probably voted for the winner Happy New Year aby P.S. for the non-Bantu Fodorites Mwangi is a very typical Kikuyu name (& so is Mwai Kibaki...) ... |
Mwangi obviously voted for the ”winner”.
|
It would be obviuos even with a Polish name.
