Kaye's MalaMala Photos from July/August 2010
Hi everyone
Thought I had better get these up before I leave for the next trip. Hope this works as I have them up on facebook! We shall soon find out! Was there from 16 July to 16 August 2010 so had many incredible sightings! Kind regards Kaye http://www.facebook.com/album.php?ai...9&l=6233cae382 |
OK that seemed to work for me, hope it does for those that wish to see the photos.

You have some very nice animal photos. The leopard ones are amazing. Thanks for sharing.
|
Your link works fine for me, thanks.
So, back to MalaMala I presume? And for how long, the usual 4-5 weeks? Think you'll miss Nils? I would, he was sure fun to have lunch/dinner with. regards - tom |
Kaye, sorry I missed you when we were there. I know you were at Main Camp and we were over at Rattray's. You have some wonderful photos! Thanks so much for sharing.
|
Thanks Axel2DP - pleased you enjoyed them!
Hi Tom and yes, back to MM, we will be there for 4 weeks and I guess it will strange without Nils there, just as it is without Tom and Shelley. Hi Andy, you are very sweet to say so, thanks! One day our paths will cross at MM I am sure! Kind regards Kaye |
Ouststanding as always. Tremendous leopard and lion pictures, especially the younsters. I thought the story went that Mala Mala was named for Sable but now there are none. You found one. Can you enlighten us on the sable situation there?

Wow, such great photographs of some amazing sightings!
What equipment do you use? |
Hi Lynn
and thanks. MalaMala is Sable or an abbreviation thereof as obviously in the early day, there were 100's and 100's of them. By the time I went there, the very first time I saw 1 beautiful bull in September 2001 and then none since though rangers have sighted them briefly in that time. They had seen this small herd a few times and we searched for a few gamedrives before seeing them twice and I felt very lucky although the sighting was brief as they are quite nervous as they come in from Kruger. Reserves that have man-fed dams have brought in numbers of zebra and wildebeest and sadly this has helped the demise of the sable. They really are a magnificent antelope! Wonder what the comment was that the moderators removed or from whom, anyone know? Nikao, thanks. I have a Nikon D40x with a 70-300mm lense but for this upcoming trip will have a D90 and a much better lense so cannot wait to test that out! Kind regards Kaye |
Maybe sable populations will grow a bit.
Don't know what was removed, but I've "triangled" a few posts lately that are clearly ads about unrelated products or services that are tacked onto threads randomly. |
Thanks for posting these, Kaye. You had some great sightings, and I enjoyed viewing your pics. Love the leopard shots and am very envious of your owl photo---I still haven't taken a good one of an owl, either home in the US or in Africa (good reason to return). Steve

Hi Lynn
Not sure what was removed, oh well never mind! Not sure that they will as very nervous I would have loved to have seen them in the 100's! Thanks Steve, as if I need a good reason to return! Birds are by far the hardest to get generally speaking as by the time you spot them and back peddle, they fly off and I am not known for my speed in taking photos! Lucky sometimes I guess! Kind regards Kaye |
Kaye - really nice photos! I'm so jealous of all the leopard sightings everyone has.... guess I'll have to head to SA to join the club :-)
|
Thanks Cateyes555, I am always very lucky in my leopard sightings, and to see that baby was wonderful, but it takes work and patience, not something that all guests have! We did a few trips to where we thought the Mum would be, and without her there, you must leave, so twice we waited away from the den site and hoped she would come back to feed the baby and on one such occasion after about 30-40mins we were rewarded with the beautiful Jakkalsdraai Female returning to give the baby a morning feed!
And yep, to see those sort of sightings, you do need to head over there! Kind regards Kaye |
Kaye- Great photos, thanks for sharing. The little cub is adorable. You are absolutely correct about work and patience...one good reason to have a private vehicle if possible. Civets, porcupines and honey badgers, wow!!

Great photos Kaye! Just brought back some great memories of my trip to Singita. Trying to see if I can go back this year. I hope you have another wonderful trip.
|
