Gina-As high as 106, but we had a week of cool weather, high 90s. Never thought I'd feel high 90s was cool, but we are all rejoicing in the break.
Nome? Thats not even close to Homer. I used to live in Anchorage. I'll email if I have more, but that's about it for now. Liz

Liz, how did you reserve your flights from Wilson to Masai Mara? May I ask you how much per person? We are trying to plan our few days to Mara in June 2004 after our annual trip to the Seychelles.
We wanted to go to Tanzania for the first time but only direct flights from SEZ are to Nairobi.
Liz, it is 51 degrees in Nome right now. How about cooling off there.

Gina- You can book flights to the Mara at www.airkenya.com. They have the schedules and prices there. Just email them with all the details and they will email back in about a week with the reservation, charges, and wiring instructions. It is currently $207pp round trip. Morning and afternoon flights each way. Real easy. If you have to cancel, they will refund the money they said. Just let them know ahead.
You can also click on Regional Air Services in the lower left hand corner of their main page and get the flights to Kilimanjaro and all the spots in Tanzania. All the schedules, fares, etc. We had Ndutu book that part of the air for us, but you could surely do it all yourself.
Nome temperature sounds real good, but why in the world go there? I never wanted to when I lived there and want to less now. Oh, I remember, hiking. I liked Homer and the train ride there from Anchorage. Real fun trip for an outing for a day. Let me know if you need more, i.e., the Aero Club contact if you need a dayroom at Wilson.
You know from Vegas you can drive to Zion National Park and hike some of the prettiest trails in the world. We do it once or twice a year. Just breathtaking. Liz

Okay, the train trip was to Whittier, Alaska from Anchorage. I never was to Valdez and I don't think I was to Homer. It was 35 years ago, I'll quit reminiscing if I can't even remember the right towns.

Liz, thank you for all helpful information. I will be waiting for any more details you may recall.
Why Nome? Well, because it is a very unique place. Although it is south of Arctic Circle it is part of Arctic Alaska. It is only town in the Arctic that has almost 270 miles of roads leading to exceptional hiking and wildlife viewing.
Because Nome's history is very interesting. During gold rush 25% of Alaska population lived in Nome and now there are less than 3,000 residents.
Because there are many unique animals. I always wanted to see muskoxen on tundra. Tundra should be in a full bloom!
Because this is where the Iditarod Race ends.
Because there is Carrie McLain Museum
Because of more than 20 hours of daylight in July.
Because there is a beautiful beach
Because of its proximity to Siberia and possibility of going there for a day trip
Because people who live there are happy to see visitors
Because we like places that are unique and we never been there before.
Because I read several posts here that recommended visiting Nome
Need I say more?

Re: Travel to Mara, do you want more information? Please specify. I gave you all the details.
I'm not sure what you meant by more details. Enjoy your trip to Nome. I'm not sure if I offended you by asking. Sorry if I did. Liz

No, Liz you did not offend me by asking about Nome. But it is funny that the same day someone asked why would I want to go back to Kenya again. Because... Then I started to list all the reasons and there were so many of them. I think you understand. I know that Susan, Kavey and many others would understand as well.
By the way, a few days ago we got our tickets to Las Vegas for the end of September. How did you know? We do not gamble but we are renting a car and driving to Zion Park for three days, then back home.
Regarding Mara, I will be eager to hear ALL details when you return. What days are you going to be there?
