July/August in South Africa
 

I have read that July/August can be rainy and chilly in South Africa. Would this be detrimental to a big trip?

Depends where in the country. Cape Town and the south can be that way; on the other hand in the north, like around Kruger NP, it can be dry, warm in the daytime and chilly at night, an ideal time for safari. No bugs either.

Cape Town and the Garden Route may be, but it's the best time for wildlife viewing in the rest of Southern Africa. What's your plan?

The answer to your query really depends on your itinerary and whereabouts in South Africa you will be travelling.
For instance, July/August is considered rainy season in Cape Town, but in the north of the country, this time of the year is dry and great for game viewing ... if you have per chance scheduled a safari into your vacation.

Also depends on how you feel about "chilly" weather. We were near Kruger in South Africa in September and I felt it was a little chilly to really enjoy the outdoors.
