We went to Petra last September and had a great time, but it was a bit warm (October will be a little better; spring is supposed to be the best time because of the wildflowers). We stayed a few nights in Amman, rented a car and drove to Jerash. It was an impressive site but the roads were under construction and we spent too much time trying to find our way. It took about 6 hours to drive to Petra via the King's Hwy; there was some nice scenery but I hesitate to recommend it because it was such a long drive(again, the road was under repair in spots). We returned to Amman via the other highway, which only took 2-1/2 or 3 hours.

In Petra we stayed at the Movenpick and would recommend it. Give yourselves at least 2 full days to see the site, if possible. Go to all of the "high spots" and take lots of film.
