Johannesburg-sightseeing&dining

We arrive in Johannesburg at 9:15 A.M. We're spending the night at the airport Holiday Inn. Does anyone have suggestions on what to do during the day, and for a good restaurant for dinner?

I like The Butcher Shop on Sandton Square, but its not near the airport. I would visit Soweto if I had a free day and then to Sandton.

Hello,

If you have a day, you could certainly do a Soweto tour (but you need to book this in advance -- i tried to do it when I landed and it didn't work out). You could also visit the Apartheid Museum, which is what I ended up doing on my layover.

If you hire a car, you will be able to drive to Sandton and to other more interesting places, like Greenside and Melville. Both Greenside and Melville have lots of little shops (bookstores, antiques shops) and great restaurants -- they are also two of the only places in Joburg where you can walk around and still feel safe. Melville is a bohemian area which is a bit like Berkeley in California (minus the hippies) and Greenside is a bit more gentel.

If you do go to either of the above, there are plenty of great restaurants. I recommend Yum in Greenside and Soi in Melville.

Cheers,
Julian
