johannesburg hotels?

Has anyone stayed at the Grace or Ten Bompas or the Victoria Hotel in Pretoria? Any comments? there seems to be so many gorgeous hotels to pick from in Capetown but hardly any in J'Burg!
cheers

Never stayed at them but the Grace is in a nice area and is very convenient. It is right near the Rosebank Mall. Ten bompas is also supposed to be very nice but I don't think you can walk to the mall, although I could be wrong.

Another thought. You may want to look into the Michelangelo and Sandton Sun hotels, both in Sandton, which is a very exclusive upscale area adjacent to Jhb northern suburbs. the Sandton Sun is actually part of the Sandton Mall. there is another htoel alongside the newer part of the mall but I can't remember its name.

I cannot improve on the recommendations for JHB but, although I have never stayed in the Victoria Hotel, the area in which it is situated leaves much to be desired I would rather try the Sheraton. (I live in Pretoria.)

Gabe,
I can't recommend the Grace at Rosebank highly enough. In fact I'm pleased to be able to plug them because I'm very fussy and generally find hotels aren't what they are hyped to be. The Grace is a great place if your're looking for a layover night or two...personally that's all I'd want to be in Jo'burg. It's a way from the airport and built right next to a safe upscale shopping area. When we arrived they sat us down straight away and asked what we would like to drink. We booked a very cheap rate of 70US through the Small Luxury Hotels website and then they upgraded us (apparently because we booked on the website) to a suite. The suite was just lovely with a HUGH arrangement of fresh flowers. The main thing was the service which was unparallelled during our stay. Hope this isn't too late...there are other places in Joburg. for example the Saxon whichh was previously Mandela's residence, but I'd go with the Grace.
Hope this advice isn't too late!

Angela, What is the web address, for the site you used, to make your reservation for the Grace? That is a great rate.
Thanks a lot

Gabe and Joan,
what can I say...you used to be able to book through slh.com I suppose the best thing now is to try their own website www.grace.co.za or to email them and ask for a "special rate", weekend rate, midweek rate...whatever you can get. I'm sorry that www.slh.com isn't an option because it can be a good place for corporate and other rates. Sorry I haven't been more helpful,
Angela

Hi Gabe

There are plenty of good hotels in Johannesburg. And the Grace is one of them. The hotel is situated in Rosebank. My other recommendations are:
The Saxon Hotel, The Westcliff Hotel, Michelangelo Hotel, Sandton Sun & Towers Intercontinental Hotel, Hyatt Rosebank Hotel, Hilton Hotel Sandton, Holiday Inn Crowne Plaza, Balalaika Hotel, and there are the 5 star hotels at the casinos - Caesar's Palace, Montecasino and Carnival City. If you need any more help with regards to Johannesburg, please email me.

Our favourite was Ten Bompas - small, stylish and very good service. You can read our detailed review at http://www.i-escape.com/tenbompas.php
