Johannesberg

Will be going to Johannesberg end of July. My husband will be on business the 1st 5 of the 11 days we will be there. What can a women safely do to keep herself occupied during the day-what hotels & restaurants (upscale)would you recommend- any suggested side trips after the business portion of the trip is over?

Well being in the golf promotional business I have to say - golf! Check out the Wanderers which is an athletic club.It is near Sandton City which is a complex with 5 tiers of shopping and a safe place to be. Are you part of the Sustainable Development Conference? I believe they have have block bookings so check that out. There is theme park called Gold Reef City which is actually an old gold mine and there are tours of it. There is a casino near the Airport and is called Monte Casino. There is a War Museum. There is a wild life park just outside the city. There is a lot really good live theatre. There are quality restaurants all over Jo'burg. It would probably good to have a registered guide so you don't waste time getting lost and like that. Remember, there will be an element out there who are likely to target the conference people so use caution. You can buy lovely diamonds in beautiful settings for what, when reduced to US$ or British pounds is quite inexpensive. Hope this helps

For good restaurant recommendations, look for a magazine called Wine. It's available in all the CNA stores. Johannesburg is a really wonderful city for fine dining, and cheap too.

In Sandton you'll also find, in addition to Sandton City, a complex that includes the Michaelangelo Hotel, which is really nice. It looks out on a square with elegant shops and restaurants. Some great things to buy are carved verdite sculptures, woven wall hangings and table mats/cloths, etc. of Lesotho wool, and jewelry.

There is a good museum of African life near the Market Theatre. I can't remember the name of the museum at the moment, but people at your hotel will know. There is also a wonderful open air market on Saturday mornings at the Market Theatre, with stuff from all over Africa. But don't go there alone, and hold on to your purse when you go. It's in a seedy area.

If you can, take a side trip to Kruger Park. It's a long day's drive from Jo'burg, or a short flight. It's the granddaddy of all nature parks, and it's really wonderful. As is Umfolozi-HluHluwe.

And I second the suggestion for Gold Reef City. It's touristy, but fun and interesting.

Have a wonderful time!

If you can't get to Krueger National park, I recommed a full day tour with a small but marvelous tour operator called T.K Tours. T.K. is great. My 23 year old daughter & I went to Jo'Berg and only had a couple of days there before moving on to Capetown, but with T K, I feel we got the tour of our lives in a short period of time. We went to a Braai at Heima Safari and it was nice to chat with locals at Wandes Place. We were able to see the historic spots(Nelson Mandela's previous home & Winnie's current home. We also drove thru Soweto(also an inportant cultural & historic area)At the small safari resort, you don't get to see the big 5 animals, but there are lots of zebras, elands and peacocks walking about. The resort itself is quite lovely.Round huts and very pesceful. I eould have loved to stay there if we had more time.Sunning by the pool with the zebra. As several others have mentioned, Sandton City is the place to stay & the shops are wonderful. We stayed at the Crown Plaza, near the Michaelangelo.
