Jerash or not?

I'll be traveling to Jordan in November and am wondering if Jerash is worth rearranging our schedule for? I've been to Ephesus and Pompeii.

Is Jerash too far to go to from Amman and then go to the Dead Sea in one day? This seems to be the only way we can fit it in now.

Thanks in advance for any help you might be able to give me!

Yes, I think that Jerash is worth the visit, it's a very well preserved site.
If you leave early in the morning, you can go to Jerash and the Death Sea on the same day.
I did it 8 years ago.
I do not know where you are going, but don't miss Petra of course but also Wadi Rum.

As I recall, drive from AMM to Jerash was less than 1/hr (maybe 40/min) north. Dead Sea is about 1+/hr south of AMM. With an early start and depending on how long you spend at Jerash, you can certainly also visit the Dead Sea.

Thanks so much Mike and sandi. Having firsthand experience is priceless, because just looking at the mileage doesn't mean a thing.....road condition, traffic, etc.

What is Wadi Rum? Our travel planner from Cairo is including Mt Nebo and Mabada....are they worth seeing if it takes time away from Petra? How much time does it take to see Petra without rushing?

Thanks again fodorites....thanks to you my trips have been unforgettable!

While we're there we don't want to miss a thing!

Ditto on Jerash.

I spent a whole day at Petra and it is definitely worth a visit. You could do portions of it in a couple of hours but if you really want to explore, you need a day in my opinion.

Yes jerash in worth to do and you can make it in one day with Dead sea because it is only 40kms from Amman.

Deb is perfectly right about Petra.
Wadi Rum is a desert between Petra and Aqaba, the rocks have beautiful shapes and colours. Many movies were shot there. It's home for the bedouins.
I love the place

Everyone is correct that you can definitely do Jerash and the dead sea in one day out of Amman.
As for Madaba and Mt. Nebo, what day were you planning to see them? Same day as jerash and dead sea? There is a famous mosaic in Madaba (if you have been to Jerusalem, you likely saw a replica of this in the Roman Cardo in the Jewish quarter of the old city), and while it was interesting, if I were short on time it can definitely be skipped in my opinion. Mt. Nebo is another quick stop (that I believe was just a short drive from Madaba, if I am remembering correctly), and there’s not much to “see” here, but it has religious significance to me, thus I really wanted to make a stop there. You definitely need at least one full day at Petra. Wadi Rum is an easy add on from Petra and it is definitely worth it to spend a night in Wadi Rum, but I don’t know how many days you have …

How many days are you in Jordan?

nancyz Jun 22nd, 2008 06:00 PM

Thanks to all of you! We have arranged to go to Jerash the day we arrive in Amman and then travel to the Dead Sea for the night.

The next morning we check out the salty water in the Dead Sea, then go to Mt Nebo and Madaba if it is wothwhile, on the way to Petra. We spend 2 nights in Petra and then drive to Amman to fly out.

By the way, Elizabeth S. I have read your blog and it has been an indispensible as well as entertaining guide to both Jordon and Cairo. All of your fantatic pictures have been a huge aid in what we'll see. I plan on keeping up with the rest of your travels!

Now, 8 years later, is it still safe to travel in this region?
