Itinerary - Your Ideas, please

Our agent is booking us at Tarangire (Kikoti), Ngorongoro (the Lodge on the rim) and Serengeti (Migration Camp). Nights: 3,2,3, respectively. Is this enough? And are we missing anything major, e.g., would a night at Lake Manyara be worthwhile? This will be a privately guided trip, by road, except for the flight back to Arusha from Lobo. So, we have some control over what we see and places we visit. In the Ngorongora Area, any suggestions besides the Crater and Oldavai Gorge? And specific areas of the Serengeti ... we will be there in November, so the animals will still be in the Mara but beginning to head south. Could we drive up toward the Kenyan border to see them?

Final issue: the best strategy on air fare seems to be from Newark to JRO. Fares appear to be $1700 pp. Any thoughts ... we are free to depart the US from any city.

Many thanks for your aid. We have been reading all the postings ... simply excellent ideas and reports.

Hi CiaoLeone,
What time of year?

I think that flight price is good, but I defer to others who fly from the NY area.

I'd add time to the Serengeti if you can swing it, perhaps, depending on time of year, another area.

Oops, I see you're going in November. Have you checked out migration maps on various web sites? go-safari.com and africadreamsafaris.com both had/have maps. If you can swing it, I might do two nights somewhere in central Serengeti on your way up to Migration Camp. There is quite a bit of resident wildlife year-round there, although many tourists as well. Still, it will cut your drive and give you access to more areas of this amazing, gigantor park.

From any city, but looking at departing from Newark? Which airline? Continental?

$1,700 is high, unless you're traveling over Thanksgiving. Otherwise, fares should be less, in the $1,400 range, though KLM has been upping the fare into JRO this past year.

Check www.kayak.com for airfares from the city you live and from where you have to depart/return, including connections somewhere in Europe (Amsterdam) to get to JRO.

hi CiaoLeone

3.2.3. means same numbers of nights in Tarangire & Serengeti;
Serengeti should get the "lion's share" IMO

Do you miss anything??
there's so many more things to do.
tell us what u expect, like, dream of & we may recommend...
can you add some days ??

We are flying Washington DC - Dulles (IAD) to JRO via Amsterdam in September. We tracked the airfare for about two months while our safari company worked out the details of our safari. The airfare was consistently around $1,700. We are staying overnight in Amsterdam but that did not change the airfare. If you consider an overnight in Amsterdam just note that hotels in Amsterdam are expensive.

Is eight nights enough? Considering how long it takes to get to Africa we opted for a longer safari; but we added some nights at Serenas to offset the cost.

Rather than go from Ngorongoro straight to Migration Camp we are breaking up the drive with a night at Mbuzi Mawe Tented Camp.
