My husband and I put off starting our family for a year so that we could go to Africa. One of the best decisions we ever made!

As a mother, my advice is to take your time deciding when or if you want children. My son is a blessing in my life, but I love to travel and missed it for several years. He's now 8 and we're vacationing frequently again. We took him to Paris last summer, Mexico around Christmas, and just returned from Las Vegas (took an amazing helicopter tour to the Grand Canyon). We're planning a safari for 2006 (he'll be 10).

I finally feel like I'm a complete person again. Travel was a huge part of my life before parenthood, and it was hard to give up for a while. Now it's a huge part of family life for us.

Don't let anyone push you (or guilt you) into starting a family. Becoming a parent is a selfish decision -- it's about your needs and wants. Parenting is selfless -- your desires take a back seat to your children's needs. It's incredibly rewarding, but not without sacrifice.
