Is it worth going to Amboseli?

I want to see Mt Kilimanjaro but I have heard that Amboseli is not the greatest park to visit and I can get just as good a view from Arusha. Is this true? Would I be better off spending more time in Tanangire than Amboseli. Good animal viewing is primary on my list but I would still like to see Kilimanjaro.

It may depend on the time of the year. We were in Amboseli in late September and have seen the big five in one and the same day. Really lots and lots of animals! The Mt. Kilimanjaro was in the clouds, though!

Agree with Myriam - more often than not Kili is covered in clouds. So if that is your main purpose, you might not see much of anything regardless which country you're visiting.

In conjunction with your other post re the Serengeti in September, what does your itinerary look like? With that information we might be able to better advise what to add or omit.

When we were in Amboseli two years ago, the snow-capped peak of Mt. Kilimanjaro was visible every day. Early morning and late afternoon, there it was - providing a wonderful backdrop for our photos. Obviously we were lucky. The elephant population is phenomenal in Amboseli and we saw lion, cheetah and almost any other animal you can imagine. Personally, I think the view of Kili is better in Amboseli than what you get in Arusha, Tanzania. Tarangire and Amboseli are completely different safari experiences, IMO. If you can do both, I would do them both.

Lucretia, we have never been to Amboseli, but we have been to Tarangire, and it was probably my favorite of all the parks we visited in Tanzania. That being said, while in Tanzania, we never got a good view of Kili, just some glimpses of it through cloud cover.
