Is it necessary to have a car in these areas? Were planning on staying at a private game reserve such as Sabi Sabi, Mala Mala, Singita... Do places such as this provide all the game viewing or are you able to go on your own if you have a car?

If you're staying at luxury game reserves such as Sabi sabi(I did stay there)etc they provide transportation so really not necessary in that case to have your own. They provide the game viewing

The upscale game lodges in the Sabi Sands area are not going to allow you to drive a private car in the bush.

You wouldn't want to anyway because you will not have any idea of where to look for the game. The rangers do know where to look. They also talk to each other on their radios and if something exciting happens you'll sudden find several land rovers converging on the same kill.

Harold is absolutely right.
The guide knows where to look for the lions and other animals..They can read track marks. He/she will give you great information on the animals and the fauna, etc...
