Interesting article about Kruger Park
 

For an article supposedly about Kruger Park, the author doesn't really seem to spend any time there--he just bounces around the borders.

Obviously, like most (if not all) African national parks, Kruger has its problems. But to call it a "crisis," and then use partial truths, is somewhat irresponsible. For example, I know that at least one of the conference hotels is in fact NOT being built "smack in the middle" of the Park. In fact, it's being built just inside one of the borders, near a populated area. And the rhino numbers....how many of the 333 rhinos were poached within the park last year?

Author says - "I am to spend three nights at Royal Malewane in the central Kruger area and two nights farther south at Leopard Hills in the Sabi Sands area."
He doesn't know where he is, look at this map showing Royal Malewane -

The RM is way out to the west on edge of a private reserve, Thornybush Reserve. At least Leopard Hills camp is closer being in Sabi Sand. But neither are in Kruger National Park.

I think he wrote the article to get some comps from those camps. RM's rate is over $1,400 per night and LH's about $1,100.

The problem with elephant population in the Kruger area is not really new, has been well known for what, 30 years?

He doesn't mention the threat of the damming of/near the Oliphant River and other rivers.

Agree Gritty, unfortunately the author didn't have all his t's crossed, however, it is of concern that their will be an influx of visitors and to avoid a potential Mara and Amboseli situation that Kenya now faces - Kruger has to be careful and manage and monitor the situation very carefully.

Also agree w Gritty. Have had minimal expereince here, but a BIL has been around this area many times in the last 20 years and he is very vocal about his time here and we love a lively discussion.... (living vicariously...)Kruger just came up this weekend as a matter fo fact.
