Amazing! I probably would have peed my pants.
Preening, smelling... guess they figured you really 'weren't' one of them, not even cousins many millenia apart. WOW!

Not sure if this will promote gorilla tourism or give potential visitors pause.

As I mentioned in "the lounge" where this was also posted, it does not seem fair that the visitors must pay several hundred dollars for their hour with the primates, but the gorillas get their hour with the primate visitors for free.

Incredible. Loved it. We go to Uganda in a month doubt we will see anything like that but makes us so excited!

atravelynn, too true! But if the gorillas didn't lay out any cash they looked to provide some payment-in-kind, what with the hair grooming, attempted nit picking and a little smooch.

Love this one. Love the look on the guy's face. If any of you Africaphiles haven't visited "our cousins" ([email protected] MyDogKyle ), and want to do so, please go! Unforgettable.

Thanks, soooo funny, the tourist's black shirt and gray hair fascinated them.

I was thinking of MyDogKyle's "cousins" remark too.

WOW WOW WOW!!!

Anyone know WHICH camp this was?

" it does not seem fair that the visitors must pay several hundred dollars for their hour with the primates, but the gorillas get their hour with the primate visitors for free."...

...or that people pay $500 to see what this fellow saw and EXPERIENCED for free!

Now that is MY idea of a great gorilla trek!

If he was staying at Gorilla Forest Camp, the experience was not free by any means. But I'd agree with CaliNurse, it is a magical place.

Cool encounter for him, but...

Am I the only one who's thinking "why did he abandon the 'keep 7m distance at all times' rule"? I mean; there's a concrete path, and he's got two legs, right?

Even the person holding the cam that shot this footage seems way too close.

I just hope the troop didn't get any germs (and human diseases that come with them) from this encounter.

@pixelpower
I think you know, that even during the trekkings it isn´t always possible to obey the "7m rule". To stand up would have been the worst he could have done- I´m sure his behaviour was absolutely okay!

@ atravelynn--just think of the majority who pay $600/night (plus) at Gorilla Forest Camp and do NOT see this. This was one lucky guy!! Pixel, i think he stayed exactly in the submissive pose he sholud have. From my limited knowledge, better to do that than walk away!

Try to see the documentary i mentioned in the other post, and you'll see why i agree with your concerns about disease

Don't get me wrong, guys!

I agree 100%; he *did* the right thing once the gorillas were on him.

Accidents *can* and *will* happen with that 7m rule. In fact I *expect* them to happen in the bush, where people cannot get away easily.

I just didn't expect it to happen at a place where there's concrete walkways. I have a bit of a hard time believing you can actually get trapped by gorilla's while on the concrete walkways of a bush camp.

That's all.

Ciao,

J.
